Dogs that are specifically bred for the purpose of becoming skilled hunters are mostly preferred by those people or families that are into the sport of hunting. This is because these dog breeds already have the inherent abilities that are necessary when it comes to hunting. One of the more popular hunting breeds is the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon. This dog breed, which is also known as a pleasant and affectionate dog that could work well as a family pet is said to be a master hunter that has qualities that are quite formidable. Developed primarily as a sporting dog, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is equal, if not better than an English gundog in hunting fitness.

A hunting breed that originated from France, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is widely known for its versatility. This dog is able to work in all kinds of terrain and is very good in both field and water. It carries out its hunting objectives quite well even in wooded and marshy areas and those with thick undergrowth. This dog can also work in different kinds of weather, as it is primarily bred to be able to adapt to working in extremely cold conditions. The tough coat of a Wirehaired Pointing Griffon protects it from dense coverings and bad weather.

As a dog of great intelligence, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon does not only use its keen nose but also its mind when it comes to performing its tasks. This makes it quite a good tracker. Its passion for the hunt mostly lies on game that can be found upland like quails or those that are furry like rabbits. The Griffon is also fond of tracking and retrieving waterfowls and quite talented in tracking wild boars as well as deer. It covers all the areas that are likely to hold some game and always leaves the hunter with the impression that it never misses a single quarry.

Aside from being a tracker, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is also used as a retriever. It is also very good in marking the location of a quarry as well as following the directions of his master or hunting partner. When hunting, the Griffon's working distance is usually within the gun range of the hunter, though, it depends on the cover that it has to go through at times. Once the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon has found its quarry, it is able to point and retrieve it with ease because of its agility. This makes this dog a great pointer and flusher. Its independence combined with its ability to be directed by the hunter makes this dog breed an exceptional hunter.

The Wirehaired Pointing Griffon is well suited for the on-foot hunter. Being joyful in doing its job and cooperating well with its hunting partner, the Wirehaired Pointing Griffon makes a good hunting companion. As it is also very eager to please its master and is very affectionate, this hunting dog is a good companion for the whole family as well.
