German Shepherd Dog

Many are fascinated by the American Water Spaniel's unique, sophisticated look. Many are also intrigued by the idea of having a dog that doubles as a great family pet and a hunting dog as well. The American Water Spaniel is a dynamic breed that very much enjoys activity and is likely to be wherever the action is. However, providing a good home for this type of Water Spaniel will not only rely on the ability to provide activity but the expectations of the prospective owner. It is not unheard of for these expectations to crash with the realities of dog ownership, especially when concessions for the breed are not willing to be made. The breed is not a demanding one but there are some things to never expect from an American Water Spaniel.

As stated, the American Water Spaniel is one that loves activity and will expect to be included at all times. Those who spend extended periods of time away from home should probably opt for a different breed of dog. The American Water Spaniel is a companion dog that depends on human companionship to stay healthy. They are also a breed that expects to wander at will; as a result, owners looking for a dog that crates well will not want an American Water Spaniel. A great bonus of the breed is that they make a tremendous watch dog. To keep heavy barking down while living in a noisy, crowded suburb will require extensive socialization.

Although they do have a bit of a stubborn streak, those wanting a dog that is more self reliant may not find what they are looking for in the American Water Spaniel. The dog often follows its owner, from one locale to the next. Privacy is not something that the American Water Spaniel understands and is likely to bark and howl when left out. Those looking for a dog they will not have to extensively train or socialize may not do well with this breed. Thanks to their intelligence, they are independent thinkers. Out in the field, they are eager to please but may require a strong consistency. The Water Spaniel loves to be out so much they can have a hard time remembering to pay attention to command.

The American Water Spaniel is simply not the breed for the inactive person or family. However, those looking to change their lifestyle can look to the American Water Spaniel for inspiration. The breed will simply not tolerate a sedentary lifestyle. Any attempt to put off taking the dog out for exercise can eventually result in the breed's anxiety; in turn, this can lead to destructive chewing, howling or barking. Those who expect their American Water Spaniel to get along with other household pets will need to bring their dog up around these animals from the very beginning.
