The Saluki dog has been around for many thousands of years yet is very unfamiliar to many people. In fact, many people have not even heard of the Saluki dog. When they hear about the dog, they instantly become interested because of its wonderful qualities as a pet. More and more dogs are being kept indoors and treated as members of the family, rather than outdoor dogs as they were years ago. The Saluki dog is kept in the house by most owners and they become very attached. This is one quality of the Saluki - they cling to their owners.

The Saluki makes a wonderful indoor dog. They are a very clean dog that doesn't shed very much, which is what usually discourages people from wanting dogs in the house. They are very beautiful dogs, especially when they have been freshly brushed. The Saluki is a topic of conversation for any visitors that come to your home. If you have a problem with mice in your home, you won't need a cat if you have a Saluki dog. They will chase after anything that runs, and they will usually catch it and kill it. This is one reason why the Saluki should never be off leash when they are out of the house. As well behaved as they can be, their high prey drive takes over and they can't be trusted.

The Saluki dog is not a dog that enjoys being by himself. He craves company regularly. You will not be able to be in the house in one room and have your Saluki in the other room. He won't tolerate this. He wants to be right by your side going where you go and doing what you do, or at least pretending he is! If you have a full time job and will be gone all day, the Saluki may not be the right dog for you as they don't do well when left home alone in the house all day. They tend to feel isolated and deserted and will become destructive.

Because of their thin body frame, their bodies are delicate and can be damaged very easily. Lying on the floor or ground all day every day will cause damage to their coats, skin, and joints. They require a soft surface such as a soft dog bed, pillows, or a couch. Their body lacks the natural cushioning most dogs have. So be prepared to share your bed with your Saluki or provide him with a soft bed of his own, preferably a bed that gives him access to his food and water.

The Saluki is a very intelligent dog that is easy to train. Once they are housebroken, you will have a wonderful indoor dog. It is very important that you give your Saluki some sort of basic obedience training so they can co-exist with family members in an appropriate way.
