Quite a few people may know this but dogs are born with distinct personalities all of their own. These personalities range from the completely docile, to the balanced mix of active and passive natures, to the rather hyper-active and to the rather aggressive. Just like humans, your bulldog pup can have a few rather desirable or undesirable traits that they may have inherited from past ancestors or simply have uniquely all on their own.
Knowing your Pup's Personality
Having a clue to the kind of personality a puppy has from the start can help you get used to your pet's quirks or get him to cut certain traits that may not be good for him in the long run through a bit of training. There is no assurance however that you may be able to predict what your bulldog puppy will grow up to be, however, bulldogs have certain traits that are inherent in each one. These traits are what makes bulldogs the kind of pets a lot of people consider having for their own.
Testing Temperaments
Although you cannot really get an assurance that the puppy you will be getting is of the kind of temperament you want it to have, there are a few tests that can help you determine the kind of disposition your bulldog puppy may be more inclined to grow into. These temperament tests can help you find the right kind of puppy that can somewhat match your personality or what you want to get from an American bulldog puppy. What are actually tested in these pups are their drives. These are divided into a few categories and each category can show you what kind of a puppy you may have if your bulldog pup shows a strong inclination towards one drive as compared to the other. These drives are the defense, prey, food, sex, and fighting drives. Knowing which one your puppy is leaning towards more will help you understand his personality better.
An example would be if your puppy seems to be a bit low on the prey drive. These American bulldog pups are more likely to grow up to become the couch potato bulldogs that you often see these breeds being depicted as. There are also puppies that seem to have a rather high protective or defense drive and these puppies tend grow up to become very good protectors that seem to take it on themselves to keep you and your family safe. While you may want your bulldog to have a certain prevalent personality as what their drives may show, a lot of dog owners and soon to be dog owners strive to find a kind of dog that has a balanced personality as is shown by the rather balanced drives they have.
