If you are planning to get a Norwegian Buhund, it is best that you try to get one that is of quality stock. Dogs of the same breed can differ from one another in terms of quality, and to ensure that you find a Buhund that is healthy and pure in lineage, you have to find the right breeder.

You may not be able to find many Norwegian Buhund breeders because this breed of dog is not very popular among dog lovers around the world. However, there are quite a number of Buhund enthusiasts in Europe as well as America. If you are living in these continents, you should be able to find good Norwegian Buhund breeders in your locality. You can even ask the vet or the pet store if they know of any reliable breeders of the Buhund, or you can even go to a Norwegian Buhund club to do some research. Once you have information about the breeders in your area, you can start to find out which of them supply quality Buhunds.

There are a few things you have to consider when you select a breeder. A good breeder will first of all ensure you that his Norwegian Buhunds are healthy. To find out if the breeder's Buhunds are indeed free of hereditary conditions, you can check if the dog's parents have hip dysplasia. This health problem was very common among Buhunds in Europe 40 years ago, along with epilepsy. Another hereditary illness that is known to appear in Norwegian Buhunds is cataracts. Though this condition does not happen to too many Buhunds, it is better that you ask the breeder if he has eye certificates that prove that the parents of the puppies do not have the illness.

Other than health, there are other standards that you need to be aware of when choosing a Norwegian Buhund. The good breeders will give you dogs that conform to the quality standards raised by the dog associations. One way to find out about such breeders is by searching the internet. Some of the notable online sources of breeders include Dewin, gopetsamerica and other sites that offer quality pups for sale. You might want to know each of their records first and how long they have been in the business of selling pups before you commit to buying a Buhund from them.

You can also check out the websites of the Norwegian Buhund Club and the US Buhund Club. You will find links in these sites that will lead you to some reliable breeders. Other than that, there are also valuable tips and other information in these sites that will help you raise a happy and healthy Norwegian Buhund.
