The Lowchen is a very old breed of dog that dates back to the 1500s where they were developed in parts of Europe. They have a haircut that gives them the look of a lion. During that time, this dog gained popularity with many people and was the subject on paintings by many famous artists such as Albrecht Durer as well as Goya. Durer also displayed the Lowchen in many of his wood designs. For a while, the Lowchen became almost extinct around the time of World War II. In the 19th century, they were almost completely gone. For quite some time, they were very rare. In fact, by the year 1960 they were given the title in the Guinness Book of World Records as the rarest breed around.

The breed was revived by the help of a Belgian breeder that was very interested in the Lowchen and managed to keep the breed alive and well. They are no longer listed in the Guinness Book of World records as the rarest breed, although they are still somewhat rare and uncommon. They are listed in an organization called American Rare Breeds of America, which has all dogs that are considered rare. They are also registered in the Rare Breed Network. Although the Rare Breed Network does allow any dog to be in their listing, they do put special emphasis on dogs like the Lowchen, which is uncommon.

The Lowchen was at one time used as a watchdog in London. In recent years, they have been growing in popularity. They are such a lovable and loyal dog that many people are interested in owning the dog. Their "lion like" appearance is always one of the first things that attract people to them. This is not a hairstyle that grows that way, but has to be trimmed and cut that way. Not only do they look like a lion, but when they are playing the part of a watchdog guarding their family, you almost want to believe they are "roaring" when they let out their protective bark.

The fact that they were considered one of the rarest breeds is what helped them regain popularity when the resourceful breeder helped to revive this great little breed. The more they appeared to be rare, the more people seemed to want them. When they were in demand, breeders began breeding more and more of the Lowchen to keep them in supply. The supply and demand method worked to keep them from remaining rare. You may have a difficult time finding a Lowchen right away, but if you keep looking at reputable breeders, you will find a Lowchen eventually. Although uncommon and not a dog you see every day, they are no longer rare. You just need to know where to look for a quality Lowchen.
