The Lowchen dog is a unique breed of dog that at one time was a rare breed. From the time they first became a breed of their own thousands of years ago, they were a popular dog well liked by everyone they came in contact with.
The Lowchen is a lively dog with a very positive and friendly attitude. This attitude stays with them and is directed at their entire family. They have the ability to make everyone in the household happy just by their attempt to cuddle on the couch or bed. The more that people learn about the Lowchen, the more popular they have become. They are a great companion dog that is very affectionate and loyal. They show none of the signs of aggression that are often seen in small dogs.
They are a very spunky energetic dog that gets along with just about everyone and loves playing and romping with children as well. Occasionally they may have a problem getting along with other non-canine animals, but with the proper socialization, they even get along with them in time. They do tend to be somewhat aggressive against dogs of the same sex, which is usually a dominance issue. As small as the Lowchen are, they are not afraid to hold their ground against another dog to prove their dominance, even if the dog is much larger.
At one time, they were used as almost nothing but a lap dog and hot water bottle. Although many laugh at the thought of this dog being used as a hot water bottle, they would lay under the covers with their master, snuggled right next to them providing warmth. Only the very gentlest of dogs would spend a night like this.
They are very eager to please their owners, which makes their training go well. At the same time, they are not afraid of a good challenge with their owner, if asked to do something they don't want to do. They can even be strong-willed if the mood strikes them. They can be putting up a struggle with a member of their family and a second later, jump up on their lap. With good basic obedience training, they learn very well what is expected of them.
When children are good to them, they love being around and playing with them. They have a lot of energy and are not afraid to show their affection. They are a very alert dog and not much gets past them. If they see strangers approaching, they will bark and continue to bark to alert their owners. In spite of their small size, they make good watchdogs. They maybe can't do a lot of harm to strangers, but they will give it all they have. Of all the descriptions given to the Lowchen dog, the one that is most appropriate is perfect family dog.
