If you want a dog that is more like a cat, but with a high need for companionship, then the Tibetan Spaniel might fit the bill. These small dogs don't like to be left alone, like cats, but they do often resemble cats in their ability to perch on windowsills and the way they are somewhat standoffish in temperament. This is a good dog for an apartment for an older person who wants constant round-the-clock companionship. You may think this qualifies the dog as a good pet for children, but sadly, the dog doesn't do that well with children. Children may end up teasing the dog or being too rough with it and this can lead to defensive biting at worst. At best, the dog may run and hide and not want to come out.

The dog does not need a whole lot of exercise. It is small and stocky so that it can get plenty of exercise horsing around a backyard. It is a bit of an escape artist and does know how to use its paws to try to get out of gates or doors. It can be a playful dog at times and have quiet times too. The dog doesn't bark much if it is around people, but left alone, it can become anxious and bark or chew on things destructively. This dog is not a good dog to leave alone all day while you work. It does work well for small, city spaces, but only if you are home to be with it. Otherwise, left alone, the dog will bark consistently and annoy the neighbors. Pretty soon, animal control will be visiting and the dog could end up a public nuisance. Since the dog is naturally quiet when around people, the best thing to do is only own one if you intend to be around to take care of it.

The dogs can make excellent watchdogs. In fact, they were used for this very purpose in Tibetan monasteries. They would sit on the high walls of the monastery where they kept watch and barked when any approaching visitors came near the walls of the monastery. This dog does bark when it thinks that there are people coming across its territory but it is not an aggressive dog.

If you have another small dog, the Tibetan Spaniel will not be bothered by it. It does well with other pets, even if it is not a puppy. It does shed quite a bit and needs to be brushed regularly. This is a small price to pay for such a beautiful loving dog that is loyal to a fault and endearing to most owners.
