Jack Russell Terrier

One thing that many people are not aware of when purchasing a Manchester terrier is that there are different types of them. When in fact, many people believe that there is only one type; and that is just a Manchester terrier.

What many people come to find out when learning about the Manchester terriers or when purchasing one, is that there are two different types. In fact, there is the standard Manchester terrier and the toy Manchester terrier.

When it comes to the standard Manchester terrier and the toy Manchester terrier, many people would think that there is a lot of difference between the two because they are classified as two different types; however, that is not the case. In fact, the toy Manchester terrier is only a smaller version of the standard Manchester terrier; however, there are still a couple of differences between the two.

One of the biggest differences between the standard Manchester terrier and the toy Manchester terrier is their ears. Many people think that the ears are not something that people would look at on a regular basis, but they do. In fact, when it comes to the standard Manchester terrier, its ears are more floppy and it does not have much control over them. However, with the toy Manchester terrier, its ears are naturally more erect. Along with the standard breed of Manchester terriers, they are allowed to have three different types of ears (according to the AKC); these are button, cropped, or naturally erect. When the ears are button style they are simple "made" by humans to fold over forward evenly. When a dog has cropped ears, it is when their owners physically cropped their ears the way they wanted them to look (by cutting them). When the ears are naturally erect, they are to look like a candle flame would; standing straight and tall.

Another difference that is known between the standard Manchester terriers and the toy Manchester terriers is the body size. Of course there will be a difference between the standard and the toy, because one is a miniature of the bigger one. However, there is more to it than that. In fact, the body size of the toy Manchester terrier is only up to 12 pounds, where as the standard Manchester terriers weigh 12-22 pounds on average. However, if you are raising a Manchester terrier of either type for a show dog, you must watch the weight of the dog. If the dogs exceed the "standard" weight for their breed, they may get penalized or even disqualified from the competition.

Other than the difference between the weight/body size and the different types of ears, there is no other difference between the standard and toy Manchester terriers. In fact, other than this the two breeds should be identical.
