The Italian Greyhound is a lovable and very playful dog. They love romping around with the family and the kids. They participate in many events for shows and competitions, doing well in lure coursing, conformation, obedience and agility. They particularly enjoy competing in agility events. When they are not working, they love relaxing in as many ways as they can.
The Italian Greyhound loves lounging on the couch or in bed with their master. If bed is where they choose to be, you will most likely find them under the covers cuddling next to you. They will wait patiently for you to pick the covers up so they can crawl underneath them, but if you don't, they will figure out how to sneak under by themselves. If it's not yet bedtime, you'll probably find them lying on the couch wherever their people are. As much as they love lying in bed under the covers, they are not the type of dog to go there on their own if you are on the couch. They love being where you are.
As much as they love being with their family members, they also enjoy playing with other dogs, if they are friendly with these dogs. They do get along with other dogs once they get used to each other. Make sure when introducing the Italian Greyhound to a larger dog that it is done with caution. The larger dogs can very easily injure the Italian Greyhound and the Greyhound wouldn't know enough to back off. The Italian Greyhound also has a very good rapport with cats and enjoy playing together. It's very common for Italian Greyhounds and cats to lie side by side.
Another pastime of the Italian Greyhound is playing with his toys, particularly his stuffed animals. They love playing with them, but also will shred them apart if given the opportunity. Playing catch and fetch is another activity they enjoy spending the time doing. They are not the best at retrieving their toys for you, but they love the sharing of the playtime.
When they are just relaxing in the house, they love being on high spots in your house. They love lying on the windowsill or on the back of a chair of sofa. They will occasionally climb to the top of the kitchen table if left unattended. The windowsill is probably their favorite place to relax as they can look out the window. They love looking outside on a sunny day. They particularly love just laying in the sun on a blanket with a chew toy or one of their toys. If you spend a lot of time outside in the summer, your Italian Greyhound will want to be by your side.
