Founded and created in 1898, the United Kennel Club, or UKC, is one of the most recognizable dog breed registries in the world. By offering a large selection of programs, the United Kennel Club has established itself as the world's best registry of dogs of purebred lineage. In order to create the best breeds in the world, this organization is committed to meticulous record keeping and a wide variety of conformation events for owners and their dogs. By extending their reach to the entire fifty states and to twenty-five countries outside of the United States, this kennel club is the largest performance dog registry in the entire world, including all breeds.

The History of the UKC

The United Kennel Club actually began with simple aspirations to register the Pit Bull Terrier. Since the American Kennel Club would not register this breed, this kennel club was founded by Chanucy Bennet. Primarily consisting of working dogs, the United Kennel Club strives to be more of a family oriented kennel club as opposed to a primarily show dog organization. While there are a number of shows that are licensed and promoted by the UKC each year, the main intention of the club was to include dogs that worked hard and well, but also looked good in terms of their breeding lines.

The Purpose of the UKC

The goals of the United Kennel Club are simple: to provide accurate information about the proper breeding of dogs, to help register all breeds within the current scope of the club, to keep current data on registered breeds, and to develop a wide spectrum of breed related events that will help to showcase the beauty and the athleticism of the many sanctioned breeds. The UKC wants to show the world that performance and appearance can be balanced, creating the ideal dog for both play and for show. And in that balance, they hope to create healthier dogs, and thus ensure that breed lines remain strong and continue for years to come.

What Makes the UKC Different

One of the first things that UKC prides itself on is its ability to maintain constant and direct communication with its members. By answering phone calls, emails, and letters, the United Kennel Club wants to make sure it is serving its customers well. The number of events and categories for events also helps to set the UKC apart from other kennels. But it's the up to date Performance Pedigree program that helps all registered members see their breed lines grow, providing the most complete pedigree descriptions.

How You Can Register Your Dog

It's quite simple to register your dog with the United Kennel Club, if you should desire to do so. Simply take one of three routes:

  • Register by the litter if both parents are UKC registered, you can then register the litter as well.

  • Single registrations When your dog is not registered with the UKC and nor are its parents, they can still register with the UKC if the parents are registered with other approved kennel clubs.

  • Limited privilege registration This is allowed for purebred dogs with an unclear or unknown pedigree. Even mixed breed dogs can apply.
