Feeding your dog is one of the most common things you do for your pet every single day and even though you may think that any dog food available in the market can be used to feed your dog, this is where you are wrong. A Maltese is a pretty hardy dog. However, they have rather sensitive stomachs which mean that you may have to be careful with your food selection for this kind of a pet. A Maltese puppy may need a different kind of food than its adult counterparts but they still basically need similar considerations regarding nutrients like carbohydrates and proteins for their proper growth and all around health.

Choosing Your Maltese Dog Food

When choosing your food for your Maltese, the thing you need to make sure of is the balance of the nutrients in the food you are choosing as well as the way these nutrients will be absorbed by your pet. Choosing a dog food type that may have an abundance of nutrients your dog needs but in a form that the Maltese cannot easily absorb or use is something you should be careful about. You should also remember that your Maltese's hair can benefit from the kind of food she ingests and the nutrients that she gets from her food can help make for a sleeker and shinier coat that barely sheds. It will be wise to ask your vet about your particular dog's needs as well as the kind of balanced nutrition you should try and find.

Kinds of Dog Food Maltese Can Eat

There are different dog food types that the Maltese can eat. Among the more popular ones are the dry or kibble types that are often made of around 40% carbohydrates. These kibble type dog food are packaged in lined bags that help keep the fat coating of the food from seeping out of it. The next type of dog food that you may find yourself feeding your Maltese is the semi-moist foods. You should be careful in choosing the kind of semi-moist dog food you feed your dog since some of them contain artificial colorings.

The other choices include the canned and the frozen types of dog food. The canned types are categorized into four types as well; the stew, the ration, the all animal tissue and the chunk kinds. These different kinds can be found in sterilized cans that you can easily find in most supermarkets and pet stores. The frozen kind, on the other hand, consists of all meat parts that do not have any extenders or additives and need to be thawed out only when you will be feeding your dog. Leftovers for this kind of a meal need to be thrown out though to help avoid bacterial poisoning of your pet.
