Getting a pet is a big step for a lot of people since it is a bit like having a child, at a slightly lower responsibility scale. It does, however, mean that you will have to institute certain changes in your lifestyle to help accommodate the new addition to your home and your family. Finding the right kind of dog breed to suit your pet choice may be based on a few factors.

While there are a lot of dog breeds to choose from, the Maltese is actually one very popular choice that people tend to consider over many others. Why should you choose a Maltese over other dog breeds? Why shouldn't you? Are you ready to raise a Maltese in your home? Is your home a suitable place to raise a Maltese? You may need to answer all these questions before you take on one of these dogs as a pet in your house.

The Cons

People often think that Maltese dogs are pretty high maintenance and in a way, they actually are. They have white, long haired coats that need to be cared for and they have rather finicky stomachs that make feeding them a bit tiring. Grooming is one of the most difficult aspects of these dogs and while you can trim their long hair into a certain style that makes it easier to maintain, that basically defeats the purpose of getting a long haired dog in the first place.

The Maltese requires the owner to allocate time to its grooming; otherwise the dog will end up looking scraggly and unkempt. You also need to keep this dog intellectually stimulated and trained since they are pretty intelligent pups. They are very sensitive to extreme climates and weather, which means you have to keep a constant eye on when they should go out and when they should stay indoors.

The Pros

While some people may get discouraged by the problems of raising a Maltese, there are those who only see these as challenges and take them on with gusto simply because of the benefits they get with having a pet like this. A Maltese is a very loyal and loving dog that can be easily taught to do tricks. It is a very intelligent and jolly animal that is easy to carry around due to its small frame and is extremely friendly.

The Maltese, once groomed properly, is a joy to behold simply because of its lovely white fur and its tiny stature. Those who love to style their dogs will have a ball with this breed since the long hair it has presents so many possibilities. They are very playful and loving, yet extremely loyal to their owners should they sense that there is a threat to the one taking care of them. These dogs are one of the most sought after breeds of dogs that people tend to want to have since they do not eat much, do not shed too much and are fine and amiable companions to have around.
