It is important to keep in mind that while the German Pinscher looks a lot like a smaller version of the Doberman it is really similar in temperament and attitude to the terrier breeds and it is most closely related to the Standard Schnauzer. As such, the German Pinscher tends to have a rather mischievous side that can come out it training, so there are a few tips and general strategies that the handler needs to keep in mind. Of course each and every German Pinscher will have his or her own personality, however general character traits tend to be fairly consistent across the breed, likely due to the fact that they are relatively uncommon dogs and breeders have been very selective in breeding both for temperament as well as physical ability and appearance.

One of the key considerations for trainers working with German Pinschers is that they are, like the terriers, a highly intelligent breed that tends to learn new tricks amazingly fast. While this may seem like a positive, and in some respects it is, it also means that they get bored very quickly of the same old training routine. Similar to terriers, repetitive training with German Pinschers is likely to produce boredom and lack of attention, often frustrating owners as the dogs are focused on something far more interesting than sitting for the fifth or even third time in a row. Try to keep training routines constantly changing and add a few extra twists into the routine on a regular basis. This can be as simple as adding a low jump made of two milk crates and a light piece of plastic pipe that is included in the heel and stay routine or even have the dog sit in a plastic hoola hoop as an extra twist. The routine doesn't have to be completely different, just make a few simple and inexpensive additions that add a bit of spice to the activity.

A German Pinscher is a very energetic dog and will work best after they have had a good long run or time to play. Don't try to start training when you first arrive home or before the dog has had time to get rid of all that energy coursing though their veins after a good nights rest. If you have a limited amount of training time spending the first few minutes just going for a jog with the dog or throwing a ball and having them retrieve is a great way to burn off that energy and have them settle down for training.

Finally a German Pinscher can become a dominant member of the family if they are allowed to get away with what they want to do rather than what you want them to do. Never use any type of physical punishment or yelling, these dogs are very sensitive and this will damage the relationship you have built with the dog. Rather keep training consistent, reward lavishly for compliance and ignore and don't reward for incorrect behavior. Since the German Pinscher is so attune to the owners attitude and emotions, even a bit of ignoring quickly gets the message across.
