The German Pinscher is not a huge dog, although they are a very active and energetic breed and need their exercise space and time on a daily basis. The German Pinscher is also very adaptable and can adjust to many different living spaces, however when considering a German Pinscher for your home it is critical to give some thought for the comfort of the dog as well as his or her requirements for space and exercise room.

The German Pinscher can adjust to apartment life if he or she is raised in a living space without a yard and has lots of exercise breaks throughout the day. Typically German Pinschers that are used to a lot of space or a fenced yard to run and play in during the day will find an apartment a somewhat difficult adjustment which can result in some destructive type behaviors such as chewing or even barking. Overall the German Pinscher is not a problem barker, so this is directly a result of boredom and lack of exercise space, not an overall concern with the breed. Keep in mind that the German Pinscher is a working dog and was raised to roam farms to keep vermin away from the houses and barns as well as to guard the property and herd animals. Apartment life is much more sedate for most dogs, however if they are taken out for two or three long, challenging walks or hikes per day they can do well. Mental stimulation in the form of obedience, agility or other types of training will really help in keeping the dog busy throughout the day. In addition having lots of chew toys and even having a space where the dog can play indoors will really help with managing energy levels in smaller spaces.

Living in a house or residence with access to a well fenced, secure yard is the best option for this breed if someone is not home to provide frequent exercise. Since they are a terrier and a natural tracker and hunter, a secure fence is important both for the safety of the dog as well as to prevent him or her from chasing the entire neighborhood cats and dogs. The German Pinscher is a good jumper and occasionally will dig, so proper maintenance of the fence is important. The German Pinscher, like any short haired dog, needs to be carefully monitored in cold weather and does not do well when left outside in winter conditions. If they do have to stay outside a warm, sheltered doghouse is a must in wet or cold climates.

When properly exercised and trained the German Pinscher makes an ideal indoor dog. Their short coat is easy to maintain and they shed a low to average amount year round, without a heavy spring and fall shed that is typical of other breeds. The German Pinscher does need to be part of the family and is not a good dog for someone that wants to just have a dog around the house or yard, the German Pinscher needs to be part of the family and also be part of what is going on.
