An Alaskan Malamute is intelligent, yet stubborn, which explains why it has a tendency to disobey orders. If you are planning to own an Alaskan Malamute, you may expect that training this breed of dog can be quite a challenge. While it is very adept at learning new things, it may or may not repeat what it has learned after some time because it tends to get tired of repetitions easily. The Alaskan malamute prefers new methods of training from time to time, and the owner has to constantly come up with new ideas to get it interested.

To successfully train an Alaskan Malamute, you have to start early. The best time is when your Alaskan Malamute is between three and six months old. Make sure that you establish rules inside the house while your Alaskan Malamute is still a puppy, and it is important that you show your pup that you are in charge. For instance, if you don't want your Alaskan Malamute sitting on your bed, then you have to let it know that it is not supposed to do so when it is still a puppy. If you start training your Alaskan Malamute when it is young, it will learn and remember your instructions for the rest of its life.

One thing that you should take note is that an Alaskan Malamute is pack-oriented. You should set the tone and make sure that you establish yourself as the head of the pack when your Alaskan Malamute is still a puppy. If your pup respects the fact that you are its leader, it will follow your commands more readily. Once your Alaskan Malamute has taken all its vaccinations, it's about time to start the training process. To make the training easier, you may enroll your dog in a puppy training class. It will save you a lot of time and effort, and it is also a good way to expose your pup to professional handling. Training your Alaskan Malamute in a class is important as it will maximize its potential and enable it to socialize with other dogs.

Once your Alaskan Malamute has gone through puppy training, you have to follow through with obedience training. Though an Alaskan Malamute will normally do well in training class, it may not obey its owner at home. The reason is that it is so intelligent that it knows how to distinguish class from home. Home is somewhat of a comfort zone for your pet and it tends to be more relaxed and free when it is at home. This is the reason why you need follow up training. You can use food rewards and treats to train your Alaskan Malamute more effectively. Using the correction method is another way to train your Alaskan Malamute to follow and obey your orders. Make sure that you correct or reward it at the right time; that is, when you catch it in the act of doing a bad or good thing.
