Teaching your Welsh Springer Spaniel to do tricks should be a fun task that you can enjoy together. But, in order to teach your Welshie new tricks, you'll have to improve your communication skills by beginning with a few short and simple tricks. Once you improve those skills, training your dog more difficult tricks will be a walk in the park. In no time, you and your Welsh Springer Spaniel will be the talk of the neighborhood with all of your entertaining tricks.

Once you've made the decision to start teaching tricks to your Welsh Springer Spaniel, choose quick and simple tasks to begin. Easier tricks that aren't complicated will keep your frustration level down and increase your dog's love for you. A simple trick to start with is "stay". There is a two-part understanding of this trick; first, you clearly request "Stay", and then you lightly hold your dog down in sitting position so they know when they hear "stay", this is the position in which they should be. During each lesson, be sure to practice or repeat several times to be sure the lesson sticks with your Welsh Springer Spaniel.

Because the Welsh Springer Spaniel responds best to positive encouragement, avoid yelling or show the hint of frustration during these training lessons. Always provide hugs and cuddles to your dog after a job well done, this will make them more eager to please and more likely to perfect the trick sooner. If your dog senses any anger, he will shut down and become disobedient.

Performing tricks is fun for both owner and the Welsh Springer Spaniel, so learning to perform the tricks should also be fun. You should have treats and even a ball or chew toy nearby for breaks in the lessons. The key to success here is to keep the lessons fun and entertaining. As long as your Welsh Springer Spaniel is having fun, he will continue to try and please his master.

Learning dog tricks with your dog is also a great form of exercise, and it helps the entire family bond. As part of socialization, you may want to include the entire family in teaching your Welsh Springer Spaniel new tricks. This will give your pet the sense of belongingness that it craves and it'll allow your entire family to shower him with affection as he tries to please you all.

One last thing you should consider about the Welsh Springer Spaniel when you decide to teach him tricks is that this breed often do well in various dog competition events like agility which can prove very advantageous if you decide to show your Welsh Springer Spaniel. An all around athletic dog, the Welshie will perform well in any number of endurance exercises.
