There are many interesting facts about the Coton de Tulear. Such a lively dog deserves to have great stories and tales in its past. One tall tale related to the Coton is that it swam ashore to Tulear along with the remaining crew members after their ship sank. Sure, this story is interesting, but it is more likely that the Coton was brought to Tulear by tradesmen.

History

The Coton de Tulear has a lineage rooted in royalty. As the official dog of Madagascar, the Coton was only permitted as pets for royalty, and any commoner found keeping a Coton would be sentenced to death. The "Coton" in Coton de Tulear simply means "cotton", and the de Tulear means "of Tulear" which is a modern day city called Tolaria. Tulear is believed to be named after the port city through which the Coton entered Madagascar.

Meats & Veggies

Perhaps one of the most interesting facts about the Coton de Tulear is that it is omnivorous, meaning that it eats both meat and vegetables equally. Some would say this is typical of the Coton, making it the world's greatest pet for vegetarians! Because the Coton eats both meat and veggies, vegetarians can feed their dogs the meat that they are not eating. It is not advisable that meat be totally removed from your Coton's diet as this may change its digestive system. If you decide that a no-meat regimen is for your Coton, you should monitor its stools as well as any change in mood. One or both could be a symptom of a bigger problem.

Lifespan

Cotons are both lovable and lucky, so it seems. In general, the Coton de Tulear is a healthy animal that can live to be 18 years old. All that a Coton needs to live a long and prosperous life is a regular healthy diet. You should also steer clear of puppy mills that overbreed dogs, as it is likely that their dogs will have birth defects.

Because the Coton has such an incredible lifespan, it can truly become an honorary member of any family. Cotons will be there for you when you bring your baby home from the hospital and it may even be around to see that same kid go to college. With thoughts like that, it is no wonder that Cotons are such popular dogs.

Born Entertainer

The Coton de Tulear is a professional performer, and it is common that it will walk on its hind legs and perform tricks to impress its owner. You'll never have a dull moment with such a companion. It is also rumored that Cotons have the ability to smile, talk and even dance. The Coton de Tulear can entertain its family for hours on end, and all that is required in return is undying affection. Not a bad deal for complete and total loyalty.
