Breeding the Pointer is something that has to be done only after lots of thought and consideration for the reasons you intend to breed the dog. If you intend to breed a litter of Pointer puppies to make money, you may as well abandon the idea. This is because the English Pointer is basically not a dog that promises a lucrative, commercial proposition.

In fact, very few people have actually made any form of profit by raising Pointer puppies. Even the supply of Pointer puppies has by far exceeded its demand. And so considering this surplus of English Pointers, veteran English Pointer breeders now breed Pointers only with the aim of improving the quality of the breed.

However, the pursuit of improving the Pointer breed proves to be a rather expensive proposition. The only reason breeders actually breed Pointers is because of their love for this breed of dogs. Most breeders look for means of improving both the appearance and hunting abilities of the Pointer breed of dogs.

Not only do you need a basic knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the Pointer, it is important that you also have a lot of capital if you intend to breed Pointers and improve its breed.
When you actually buy an English Pointer to start breeding, it is important that you be selective in choosing the right breeder to buy the Pointer from. This is because different kennels have different qualities of Pointers for sale. There are some kennels that tend to boast about their Pointers, and make statements that have to be confirmed by all means.

If you intend to breed your Pointer, you have to remember that a good breeder is one who sets an objective in the breeding program and is a person who is capable of reaching that objective through a well planned, intelligent, and long range breeding program. Without this preconceived plan of the type of Pointer you intend to produce, there is actually no point in starting to breed your Pointer.

The true breeders use a score sheet to help them reach their objectives while breeding the Pointer. This score sheet helps in evaluating each animal for both desirable characteristics and intolerable faults in the animal. It is only through observation, trial, and error will it be possible to breed top quality Pointers and strains of Pointers through your breeding program. Selective line breeding is the best way of creating successful strains of Pointers through breeding.
With this concept, the established characteristics of a strain are maintained by choosing the best Pointers to breed the best breeds. While inbreeding Pointers, certain desired characteristics of the animal may be intensified and unwanted characteristics eliminated. It is also possible to incorporate a desired trait of a Pointer with another Pointer not having this trait with the help of out crossing.
