The English Toy Spaniel loves to be treated as royalty! There are several things that you can and should do to make the environment of your English toy spaniel, or Charlie, comfortable.
Charlie's are excellent for apartment style living. Due to their size and their easy to care for coats, they are perfect for an elderly person or someone who is living in the city. They like a life of luxury and leisure. They do not need a large yard and will do relatively well without a yard altogether. They do not need a lot of exercise. They are to be considered a true indoor dog. However, they are always ready to romp and play for short periods of time if you want. Otherwise, they are content to just lie in a chair and rest for hours upon end.
The Charlie loves a calm indoor environment. They are true lovers of comfort and especially of couches! They enjoy snuggling into piles of pillows that they consider to be soft. They love to cuddle on your lap. In short, they consider lounging around all day to be the epitome of a hard day's work. The softer the cushion, all the better! The Charlie should feel adored and admired. If a Charlie does not receive the royal treatment, he may begin to feel neglected and will become stubborn and inflect an air of superiority.
The Charlie should never be considered an outdoor dog. If they are allowed to be outside, they should be closely supervised. They must have a safely fenced-in yard. If they do not have a safely fenced yard, then they must be kept on a leash at all times. Do not leave your Charlie alone in an unfenced yard! There could be dire consequences for the Charlie of another dog were to wander into the yard. It is too easy for the Charlie to be injured when he is not in your complete control at all times.
The Charlie is a dog in the Toy category. These dogs are considered to be fragile. They should not become overly excited. If they do, they may try to jump from your arms and may become injured. Sometimes these injuries can be fatal. They also do not do well with small children. If they are around a small child, they must be watched carefully. This will prevent injury to the child, as the Charlie may bite to protect itself and also prevent injury to the Charlie, itself.
The Charlie does not do well in humid or hot weather. They also do not do well in areas which are heavily polluted. Exposure to these types of areas can result in health problems such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease for this tiny animal. It is best and necessary to provide them with air conditioning if you live in a climate such as this.
Remember that the more you spoil your Charlie, the deeper his devotion will run for you. A spoiled Charlie is a happy Charlie!
