Pointer Type Temperaments and Traits

As a group of different dog breeds all pointers within the sporting group have several very similar traits and characteristics, particularly when it comes to their temperament. German Wirehaired Pointers

Training a Pointer Type of Dog

As a type of dog rather than a specific breed, there are more similarities between the pointers than there are differences. The American Kennel Club recognizes several breeds that are called pointers including the German Shorthaired Pointer, German Wirehaired Pointer, Wirehaired Pointing Griffon and the Pointer, sometimes known as the English Pointer. There are also many other dogs within the sporting group that also point, however they are not specifically classed as pointers. [...]

Is An Irish Setter Right For Me?

An Irish Setter is one of the most beautiful dogs with its rich, red colored coat, beautiful fringed coat, pendant type flowing tail and regal appearance. However they are also goofy, playful and highly affectionate dogs that are wonderful companions and outstanding family dogs. Owning an Irish Setter is a true joy, providing the dog itself is a good match for the family. Training And Competing With Irish Setters

As with most of the hunting dogs or the sporting group in the American Kennel Club, the Irish Setter has been bred to not only be able to think and work on his or her own, but also to work in combination with a hunter. The setter types, perhaps more than the pointers, also are effective retrieval dogs, very versatile and effective for hunters of any type of bird or small game. In addition the Irish Setter is a breed that was used by farmers and sportsmen alike, often rural people, which valued the dog as an actual companion as well as a hunting partner. This lead to increased breeding for both hunting and temperament as exhibited in the earliest ancestors of the modern Irish Setters, Red Setters and Red and White Setters. [...]

Irish Setter Temperament And Traits

It is had to imagine a better temperament in a dog than the typical personality of the Irish Setter. They are an outstanding companion dog for several reasons, not the least of what has been a concentrated effort by breeders to keep the stable, friendly and outgoing temperament of the breed as a priority with breeding programs. The breed standard for the Irish Setter specifically notes that the dog should not exhibit any signs of aggression or timidity while in the ring. [...]

Training A Weimaraner Puppy

Starting off on the right track with your Weimaraner puppy or dog is going to be a key factor in developing the type of working and companionship relationship that this breed is famous for. As a somewhat dominant type of dog, the Weimaraner has to see the humans as the leaders, or the dog will simply assume the role. A happy Weimaraner knows that they are well loved members of the family, but that there is a leader, which has to be one of the people that are going to be involved in the dog's life. [...]

Is A Golden Retriever A Good Match For My Family?

The good natured, lovable and loyal Golden Retriever is a wonderful breed of dog. [...]

American Cocker Spaniels

The American Cocker Spaniel, typically known in North America as the Cocker Spaniel, is one of the most popular pet types within the sporting dog group. This smaller sized spaniel with its dark, soulful eyes and beautiful coat has been a long time favorite in shows as well as in the field. Unlike many of the hunting types of dogs both the field lines, those trained and bred to hunt, as well as the show lines make outstanding companion pets. Both are typically very non-dog aggressive, however this does vary depending on the early socialization and ongoing training and socialization provided to the dog by the owner. [...]

American Water Spaniels

Like many of the sporting dog group, in particular the spaniel types within the group, the American Water Spaniel is largely unknown to the general public. [...]

English Cocker Spaniel

As such there is a fair amount of variation within the breed including the specific type of coat that the dog may have and the amount of grooming and upkeep required. [...]

This very recent addition to the American Kennel Club is still ranked as 112 out of 156 breeds and continues to move up in registration numbers every year. [...]

Vizsla

The Vizsla is a rare type of hunting dog that is native to Hungary and is sometimes known as the Magyar Vizsla. This medium sized sporting group member is actually the smallest overall of the pointing types of dogs and is one of the few hunting dogs that has always been prized both as a hunting companion as well as a family pet, traditionally owned by royalty and others considered to be in powerful positions. It was a breed that was traditionally seen as the dog of aristocracy in Hungary, especially before the Russian control of Hungary occurred after World War ll. However, it was not uncommon for the Vizsla to also be found with landowners and hunters alike, making them a very well-rounded and well recognized dog within the area. [...]
