For many years the Welsh Pony has been the most popular pony in a wide variety of countries and areas for all types of children's equestrian competitions. The versatility and winning personality and temperament of the Welsh Pony make it an ideal match for kids of all riding levels and ages. Since there are several different types of Welsh Ponies ranging in height from under 12 hands to 15.2 hands it is possible for even adults to easily ride a Welsh Pony, or for children to move up in competitive levels by simply moving to a larger size of Welsh Pony. For children the most common size of Welsh pony are the ponies under 13.2 hands or the Welsh Mountain Pony, Welsh Pony and the Welsh Pony of Cob type. Each one of these ponies has the beautiful action and energy that the breed is known for along with the willing temperament, kind disposition and love of being worked. Variations In The Welsh Pony Types

There are four different categories or types of Welsh Ponies. These categories are based on both slight conformation differences as well as size differences. The cob type is perhaps the best known of all the Welsh Pony types outside of the United Kingdom but the other types are increasingly more popular. The following are the general differences between the variations in the Welsh Pony types: [h]Welsh Mountain Pony[/h] This is the smallest of the Welsh Pony types and must be under 12 hands. The Welsh Mountain Pony is the original of all the Welsh Pony types and lived in semi-feral to completely wild states in the mountains where it was developed from the original Celtic pony that dates back over 10,000 years. Julius Caesar then introduced an Arabian stud into the wild pony herd, resulting in the Welsh Mountain Pony. Most Welsh Mountain Ponies are gray or gray dapple, but all other solid colors are possible. These ponies have a relatively small, refined head with a large and intelligent eye. The tails are high set and the body is relatively short. Conformation is typically excellent in the Welsh Mountain Pony. [...]

Working with, riding or training a Welsh Pony really is a wonderful experience. No matter which type of Welsh Pony or Welsh Cob Pony type you are working with the outstanding temperament is one of intelligence willingness to work and learn as well as what many describe as a sense of humor. These ponies can be a bit cheeky and independent and do best when handled consistently and firmly in training.
