Irish Red And White Setter

The Irish Red and White Setter has actually taken a backseat to the more popular all red Irish Setter, although they were originally developed from the same foundation stock and breeds. This is not a color variation on the Irish Setter; the two breeds have been separate and different for hundreds of years, resulting in a different breed standard as well as a truly different dog. [...]

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

As another breed of dog that was first developed in the Maritime provinces of Canada, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever has perhaps one of the most unique hunting methods of all of the sporting dogs. They were actually bred to lure or "toll" the waterfowl into the shoreline, allowing the hunter to take a shot. Basically the dog romps out and about along the shoreline, often chasing a stick or a ball, which in turn draws the attention of the birds. Since the dog is not in an attack posture the birds swim over closer to inspect what is going on, resulting in the hunter being able to stand and fire as the birds take wing. The Toller, as the breed is affectionately known, is then immediate ready to swim in and retrieve the downed birds. [...]

Living With Hounds

Dogs in the hound group are just as diverse as dogs in any other group, however there really are two different types of dogs within the group. Not only do the two types of hound tend to look very different, they actually behave relatively more different than alike as well. The two basic types of hounds are the sight hounds and the scent hounds. [...]

Hounds As City Dogs

Since the hound group has breeds of many different sizes, some hounds have been companion and city dogs for many years, while others are less commonly found in the city. Some of the more common and popular hounds that have adjusted very easily to life in the big cities are the smaller sized hounds, both in the sight and the scent categories. [...]

Sight Hounds Versus Scent Hounds - Differences To Take Note Of

Although all dogs in the hound group are dogs that have been bred as prey dogs, the way in which they track or hunt is very different depending on the specific breed. In general there are two distinctly different types of hounds, however there are also some hounds that overlap in their hunting styles and techniques. The two different types of hounds are considered to be those that hunt primarily by sight and those that hunt primarily by scent. [...]

Temperament Of The Basenji

Despite its smaller size, clean behavior and very beautiful looks, the Basenji is not the breed for everyone. Many people assume that with such a low maintenance, non barking dog a more ideal companion pet couldn't be found. For many dog owners this is true; however a great number of Basenji dogs are turned into shelters and rescues each year because their owners didn't really stop to consider the unique temperament issues with the Basenji. [...]

Short Legs - Big Personality

The Dachshund is one of the most unique breeds of the hound family, very much a dog that is both highly independent as well as a dog that is an outstanding family companion. This type of almost dual personality is often attributed to their very distinctive dual type of hunting style as the breed has been developed to hunt both above and below ground. While this is distinctive to the Dachshund in the hound group, there are other dogs, particularly in the terrier group, that have also been bred to hunt to flush out burrowing animals and compete in the earthdog types of competitions. Dachshunds, both standard and miniature size, are hunting dogs, even though they are rarely used in the United States in that capacity. [...]

Living with and Training a Plott Hound

The Plott Hound is a great addition to most families, however they are not always a good match for all families. This is not unusual for the breed and is rather consistent within the hound group. Their natural hunting and tracking instincts as well as their need for lots of exercise can make them challenging for several different types of families and living situations. [...]

Living with a Black and Tan Coonhound as a companion pet

There are several of the hound breeds that make outstanding companion pets and really do adjust very well to being indoor and outdoor dogs. They are not suited to living situations where the dog has to stay indoors for prolonged periods of time however and are recommended only for urban households with medium to large sized well fenced yards. This because the Black and Tan Coonhound, like all others in this group, has been bred to travel long distances on the trail of an animal and needs to have lots of physical exercise in order to stay physically as well as mentally in shape. [...]

The Unique Ibizan Hound

As perhaps one of the most misidentified dogs in the hound group, the Ibizan Hound really does bear special mention. These dogs, almost appearing to be a cross between a Greyhound and a Basenji are a wonderful companion dog as well as an amazing hunter. The breed is one of the oldest dogs, considered a primitive type of dog because of their features. Dogs that very closely resemble the Ibizan Hound and Pharaoh Hound are found on the walls of ancient Egyptian temples dating back to close to 3400 B.C. [...]

The Elegant Scottish Deerhound

The Scottish Deerhound is a very old breed of dog that originated with the Scottish nobility and the clan systems that were historically used as a way to govern and organize the country. Greyhounds, the ancient ancestors of the modern Greyhound breed, were a highly prized dog throughout the Middle Ages due to their outstanding hunting ability and their speed. The breed, however, was not well adjusted to the very rugged, damp and cold climate of Scotland and the northern parts of England. The Greyhound was bred with local dogs of indeterminate breeds, likely also to be hound types, to develop a more sturdy and robust dog that could endure the cold, wet climate without decreasing their speed and hunting talent. [...]

The Irish Wolfhound - The Gentle Giant

The Irish Wolfhound is a truly gentle giant type of dog. It is not uncommon for this breed to measure over 34 to 36 inches at the shoulders and weight up to or even over 150 pounds at maturity. Typically the males are slightly larger than the females, however they are both massive, heavy and well boned dogs that are surprisingly gentle, loving and affectionate dogs towards family, children, strangers and other pets. [...]

Training an English Foxhound

The history of the English Foxhound can be traced back through an organization known as the British Masters of Foxhounds Association, which was originally developed in Great Britain in the early 1800's. This group, comprised mostly of dedicated fox hunters, kept records of the various hunting packs, mostly owned by the wealthy royalty of the time, including breeding records and statistical information. The English Foxhound was developed from several breeds of dogs and was designed to produce a dog that had strong hunting and pack instincts, a good ability to scent, as well as an ability to keep ahead of mounted hunters. [...]

The Regal Borzoi

Both in heritage and appearance the Borzoi, formerly known as the Russian Wolfhound, is an amazingly gentle, quiet, yet highly athletic and elegant looking dog. They are a true Greyhound in both behavioral traits as well as physical appearance, although there area also some very definite differences between the two breeds in several aspects of temperament. [...]

Is a Greyhound The Right Breed For Me?

The Greyhound is such an elegant, refined, gentle and almost artistic looking dog that many people long to own one as a pet. While these are certainly characteristics of the well trained, socialized and exercised Greyhound, there is also another side to the breed as well. Many potential owners don't consider the possible challenges to owning these dogs until they actually have one in the home. Knowing all aspects of the temperament and traits of the Greyhound can help determine if you are committed to the lifelong care of this wonderful breed of dog. [...]
