Reberstein's Miniature Schnauzers is NOT a commercial breeder. We strictly breed for miniature schnauzer puppies that meet the breed standard guidelines as outlined by AKC and the American Miniature Schnauzer Club. The breed standard is our blueprint for producing the absolute best miniature schnauzer puppies. At Rebersteins we pride ourselves in breeding for outstanding temperaments, quality puppies backed by a lifetime health guarantee against hereditary or genetic diseases.
One of the leading misconceptions about the miniature schnauzer is that the smaller the dog the better. Many breeders are labeling these undersized dogs as teacups and toy schnauzers, which quite frankly is laughable and disheartening. An undersized and underweight miniature schnauzer is NOT a desirable characteristic to be passed along to the offspring of this breed. The breed standard states that a proper Miniature Schnauzer should be 12 to 14 inches in height at the withers. The standard also states the miniature schnauzer should be robust and NOT have any suggestion of toyishness. Contrary to many breeders beliefs, there is no such breed of dog labeled a "toy miniature schnauzer." Many breeders also try to pass off unacceptable colors of the miniature schnauzer such as; white, chocolate, liver, and parti colors. The only 3 acceptable colors are; black, black and silver, and salt and pepper. Once again this is outlined in the breed standard.
Many breeders of the mini schnauzer will claim to be reputable breeders, but when you research their breeding practices and look at pictures of their adult breeding schnauzers, they obviously have chosen to completely disregard the breed standard. A breeder who disregards the breed standard is compromising the gene pool and the integrity of the miniature schnauzer breed. A reputable and responsible breeder will strive to produce miniature schnauzer puppies that compliment not contradict the breed standard. Unfortunately, we have far more irresponsible breeders of the mini schnauzer then responsible and reputable breeders in the United States. Breeders who disregard the breed standard are doing great harm to the miniature schnauzer breed, but yet they profess to dearly love the breed. The schnauzer is one of the most popular breeds in the USA, which has attracted unethical and misleading breeders to the miniature schnauzer dog breed. These backyard breeders are creating their own unrecognized breed standards, and as a result we have a tremendous amount of poorly bred miniature schnauzers. If you are looking for a reputable miniature schnauzer breeder please take the time to educate yourself about this breed before choosing your next miniature schnauzer puppy.
If I could offer you the most important piece of advice when purchasing a miniature schnauzer; BEWARE of breeders who advertise toy or teacup size miniature schnauzers. These breeders do not have the best interest of you the buyer or the miniature schnauzer breed they profess to love in mind. Of course, quality miniature schnauzers will cost you more money up front to adopt, but they will literally save you thousands of dollars in vet bills over the life of your new best friend. They will also look like a miniature schnauzer and not some other breed of dog never heard of or seen before.
