I have been trying everything i know to get gunny to run when he is recalled. The suggestion i got was a good one. it takes 2 people one holding the dog the other with his or her favorite toy. take the dog and show them the toy and not let them have it. walk away and show the toy. the dog is relaease give the command. as th dog closes in (if the dog is running) throw it in between your leg behin you. and let the dog get it. this is working for gunny

Good Idea! You get a lot of those when you go to shows. I have not been to one for a long time but seeing those dogs working they look great.

There was a trainer on Animal Planet that did that exact same thing, but she said to only call the dog's name once.

Scout......................I should have said the trainer on Animal Planet used a treat, instead of a toy. There were a bunch of dogs with their owners, and she just chose one to demonstrate {that is what she said}, and the others had to repeat what she had just shown them. They all did great except for the pug aand his owner. Foul!

how bout a treat or a piece of food. cheerios are also great for training...they're small and dogs just love to get food they know isn't meant for them!

she is very treat motivated except when she is not confined. i am trying to train her for agility and it is all off lead work and outdoors with no fencing. so i need a reliable recall. indoors she is fine. its like she knows there is no way to make her do it cause she can go anywhere she wants. the agility trainer just cringes when she has to call us up for our turn. you can hear it in her voice. i wish i had someone to tape her while we are up because i know we would win the 100,000 afhv award. even though it is very hard not to laugh it really isn't funny.

Scout, can you send me a tape of that. I was at Petsmart one night during their obedience class, and everyone had to walk there dogs through the store. This woman had a huge dog on a leash, that was pulling her through the store. That dog pulled that woman right into a display in the aisle. The woman, the rack and everything on it hit the floor. Everything except the dog. He kept on running, dragging his owner. She had a skirt on and it was well above her knees at that point. She finally got up with help and went out the front door. That dog still was pulling her across the parking lot. I am useless in a situation like that. I had to leave my cart, and go to another part of the store because I was laughing so hard. I was not the only one, though.

oh that is hysterical. i would have been laughing my butt off also. that poor woman must have been mortified. scout decided she loved the a frame so much i couldn't get her off it. and she decided to make up her own agility course and went around and jumped all the jumps and went thru the tunnels. she gets to darn excited cause she loves it so much. like a kid on a playground is totally how she acts, much to my embarassment.

I could not stop laughing. I got home and told my husband about it, and I started all over again. The trainer saw the woman leaving and said, "Class isn't over." I looked at her and she was serious, that just started the laughing all over again. Now you know why I have small dogs.

cricket- that is funny stuff..i am guessing puppy classes weren;t working for her? that is why i, too, like the little guys. 15 lbs is enough for me! of course, we are the ones in class who can't so any of the commands, although i do manage to stay upright during class :)

Eskiegirl..................The thing is you can scoop up a small dog and get the heck out of Dodge or Petsmart if it really gets out of control.

Scout, you said she loves the Natural Balance roll, take a bit with you and use it as "bait". Practice at home first though, I'd hate to think of you having to gulp it down to have your hands free to catch Scout as she scoots by!

pyrmom that is exactly what i use for treats. we've already done the catching thing. scout can leap like a gazelle when its in her head. and we almost landed on both our butts. we have moved to an indoor facility now because of the weather and the lack of light. so i dont fear her taking off around the horse farm anymore, but our 1st. clas indoors was no better. i think once she gets used to the new place she'll calm down a bit. right now, she is definitely the class clown, she keeps life intersting :)
