I am starting up a small kennel. I already have one female. She is due to go into heat in about 2 months. She is just over 2yrs old. I have talked with her breeder alot and she has picked out a sire from her own stock to breed my girl with for the first time. All her breed animals are OFA Certified. I am supposed to have M&M done before the breeding takes place. What certifications do Pit Bulls need? There is the hips and the elbows. Do they need there thyroid and eyes and ears done to? Are there any i missed? I want to do this right so the pups have the best start they can get.
I am sorry I have never shown or breed a dog so can't answer. There are several people here who do so maybe they could help better. Is there not some sort of info on the web? Just hang in there and people who see this will answer if they know. I keep hearing about temperment tests so start there (shrug)
there are several pit owners on this forum i am sure they could help you. generally speaking you want to test the parents for any genetic health problems that are prevalent for the breed. not just hips, eyes and elbows. are they prone to thyroid problems, or bleeding disorders like von willebrands, etc. couldn't you breeder answer these questions for you also ? also need to test her for brucellosis which is like a doggy std. or maybe thats just males, i am not really sure.
I was told by my vet that it is common for apbt females to have prolapsed uterus and they may not be able to have a succesfull pregnancy and if they do more than likely they will pass that down to all the female pups but they can test that if you ask.nI have one that has a prolapsed and we dont breed her. She is actually gonna get fixed after the next show season. My vet said you can breed them anyways but it can be real bad for them and the babies.
You definitely want to test for brucellosis. Even in a virgin bitch. Your breeder should be able to tell you what other tests are needed. Or a national breed club usually lists the prevelant genetic diseases for your breed. ltlgto
