So my puppy, Jake, a golden retriever was chewing a new rawhide strip. He loves to chew and they keep him so content. Anyway it was getting kind of mushy and no sooner was I getting ready to take it from him that it disappeared!! I can only imagine it is in his little stomach in it's full size only mushy and now I feel like I have done something wrong!! HELP!!
Nothing you can do now. Just make sure he has regular bowel movements. He's a big dog, I think he'll be ok. Our neighbor's min poodle got a piece of rawhide stuck in her rectum and had to have the vet pull it out! (ouch) Edit: I forgot you said he was a puppy. Just watch his bowel movements and if he doesn't go daily or appears uncomfortable or bloated take him to the vet. He'll probably be fine.
If he barfs it may be cause it got stuck. I have given canned cat food for hairballs to a Lab ADULT that got them stuck. It is better to stick to things they can't swallow at that age. Like rag tugs. I have had that same experience and don't give pups rawhide till they are big. Be real careful. A pup buyer had a Lab pup woof down his kid's corndog, stick and all...$2000. later, the vet had it out.
my boxer did the same thing when she was a puppy. we were worried at first becasue she swallowed one of those really big ones all mushy all in one piece! but, the vet said that she was fine, and within a few days, it had all passed through... you probably should just call your vet just in case and also to make sure that you know what to do or expect
that is what they do after they chew them. They eat them. Dont worry unless it was a really big piece. I know people have had bad experiences with them getting stuck, but dogs have been eating rawhides for a long time, so don't worry!
