My female basset had her puppies 2 months ago now she is acting very weird. She has always been very friendly and such a sweetie to everybody. Now she is acting very weird grawling, barking and hesitant towards people. She is not like this towards me and my kids just almost evrybody else.
She is fine with my sister and sister-in-law but hates my dad. When someone cames around that she does not know she stands outside of her dog box an barks, shows her teeth and acts as if she does not want them any where near are house. She has never acted this way before. Could it be because she is outsidemost of the day and her pups are inside.
Before I say anything, I just want you to know I am not a breeder so my opinions are just silly lil things I think up in my head...theyre not based on anything I actually know for a fact! :) Anyways, I think the mother dog is still worried about her puppies and thats what she doesn't want anyonre she doesnt know near your house (nea rher babies). Why isnt she allowed inside with them?
She is allowed in the house when she wants to come inwhich is not very often. She sleeps in the house at night but would rather be outside during the day. When she wants in she comes to the back door and barks. She usally comes in plays for a while and then she goes to the door and wants back out. If it was up to me she would stay in all the time. If I dont let her out she will stand in front of me and potty even if she has just gone to the bathroom. I think it is the puppies but just wanted to know what everybody else thought.
Hmmm, I dont know, Im sorry. I agree with you, though, it's got to have something to do with the puppies and her maybe feeling like they are in some kind of danger when strangers are around. Hopefully she'll come around and realize it's ok and no one is going to bother them. Congrats on the pups BTW, are you going to post pics? Are you keeping the puppies or going to other families?
Whaen she acts like this I call her down and she stops it. Then I let her in the house and she is fine. She only acts like this outside. Acey- she had 7 one is my daughters because she helped with her when she was born. They are are going to family and friends. Jaz and Koda went to their new home Sunday and are being spayed and neutured in 2months .Whitey went to his home monday where he has a big bother know thatis a boston terr and is also getting fixed in 2months. Sassy is staying with us. Lori,Cassy and Kenia is still here but are ging to their new homes this weekendand they are getting fixed to. Everybody agreed to this before the puppies were even born.
Is this her first litter??? It sounds to me like she is protecting "her den" i.e. your house, where her pups are. If you choose to keep one of the pups, she may not ever stop this. It sounds like she just has a VERY strong maternal instinct. When she is in the house, she can see the pups and watch them and not worry, outside, she does not know EXACTLY where they are. If it is warm enough, you should test her with something, try taking the pups outside and have someone she 'doesn't like' come up and see how she acts. Don't let them touch te pups, just walk up and go into the house, or basically do what they would normally.
Yes this is her first litter. She is a very good mother to her puppies. I had her to the vet(thought she might have a infection sis'sdog acted like this when she had one after her puppies)he said she was ok just protecting her babbiesthe only way she knows how. She is just like this with males not females. She is not like this with other dogs either. Thanks everybody.
