I agree..pit puppies with floppy ears and that expression of theirs..too cute! I don't want to get slashed for this, but I think cropping their ears makes them look 'tougher' so to speak, and may make people make uneducated opinions about them.
They only crop ear's at 10 to 14 weeks old. They dont like to crop beyond that age because the the ears tend to flop no matter how long you keep them taped. The older the dog is the less likely the ears will stand. Its not cheap to have ears cropped and requires many weekly visits to the vet for retaping. It also helps if the dogs ears are thick, the thinner the dogs ears the weaker they are. good luck!
If you are going to have her ears cropped it is best to get them done now. Although I have heard of vets doing the ears at 1 year and older. Pit Bulls do not require taping unless you get a long show crop. Two of my girls have their ears done. Everyone has their personal opinion on ear cropping. I for one love the look on APBT. I think my girls look beautiful with their cropped ears. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Do you have any plans to show your dog? With APBT the show standards are different depending on if the dog is ADBA or UKC. In the show ring, a pit's ears that are natural but do not HALF-ROSE correctly, will lose points. Cropped ears on the other hand in the show ring are sometimes FROWNED upon and the dog may or may not loose points. Shadow Why do you say such things? You pretend to be an advocate of the breed but yet you turn around and stereotype the very breed you claim to love so much? Two of my dogs have their ears cropped and there is nothing at all Vicious looking about them. You want to see vicious and evil just take a look at this dog! ----------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.msnusers.com/TheEliteEdge2004/msgattachments/15958 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Just Kidding.......LOL it is scary though!
I said the same thing as Shadow. Said 'tough' though. I don't really think what she said was bad. Course, I'm biased because I said the same thing, lol. It was said, 'Beauty is in the eye of the beholder' in regards to personal preference to cropping. I think that should apply to how cropping makes people feel as well. To some people, ear cropping makes them feel that the dog may be tougher. For me personally, when I see a pit with natural ears, it reminds me of the Little Rascals. A playful dog that likes kids. When I see a dog with cropped ears, it makes me think of Animal Cops and how so many people crop them themselves so that there are not as many injuries or things for the dog to 'grab onto' during dog fights. I know that's not the reason pits have their ears cropped but that image has always stuck with me and the nasty people that dog fight are to blame. Plus, rappers and anyone else that wants to convey a 'tough guy' image always seems to have pit bulls with cropped ears and those spiked collars. That exact image is in Xzibits new music video. So it really does convey an image I think. I hope that doesn't offend anyone. I am in no way saying that pit bulls with cropped ears are tough or mean or fighters. They just look that way to me. And since the breed already has to fight for a good reputation, I think cropped ears just makes it seem worse than it is. If it makes any sense.
Huntersmom I completely respect others opinions but saying a Pit Bull looks vicious if their ears are cropped is a stereotype that the breed can do without. I personally do not see anything vicious looking about a Pit Bull with cropped ears. It just bugs me when owners of Pit bulls such as Shadow get very defensive over their dogs but then turn around and place negative stereotypes on them. I am not by any means saying she or anyone else should support the cropping of ears to each his own. But as I said labeling Pit bulls with cropped ears as vicious looking is inappropriate and damaging to the breeds already tarnished reputation.
This is kind of off the subject but it does involve ABPT and ears. Did anyone see.... I think it was Detroit Animal Cops a few days ago where some kids cut off the dogs ears? I just wanted to cry! They said they cut their ears off so that when they are fighting there is nothing to hold on to... I felt sooo bad for him. I don't know why I watch that show...it makes me so sad, but I love to watch it.
I totally understand where you're coming from. I see Bluebelle and some of your other beautiful dogs and I don't see vicious at all. They're all gorgeous :) But I have seen pits with cropped ears that do look less than friendly. I think a sad fact is that a lot of people do crop pit ears to make them look tougher. So it's easy to perceive a pit with cropped ears as such and unfortunately, it's yet another thing the breed is going to have to overcome. Edit: Added: Jawlaw, that's the exact show I was talking about in my post. You saw that too? It's those sorts of things that make me feel the way I do about cropped ears on pits.
I think they look good either way. I do think they look "tougher" or something when they are done and more puppylike when they are left natural. But, like I said, either way looks good. But I would get them done ASAP, since it's kinda late in his life to be having them done.
I personally prefer cropped. I have a Pit and a Cane Corso. "Ruby" my pit's ears are natural and my Corso's are cropped. They were done at 10 weeks old. My vet does them until they are around 16 weeks. It depends on the breed. If you are going to have them done make sure it is by a professional vet and not a BYB that does their own ears. I don't think it makes a dog look vicious or tough with cropped ears if they are done correctly. Gina H's dogs are gorgeous. I my honest opinion Pits, Corso, Danes, Boxers, Great Dane and other breeds that get their ears cropped look more majestic with cropped ears. Without SOME of them look like "mutts" to me. It just depends on the dog and the ear size. I had a doberman growing up with natural ears and everyone that saw him thought he was a Rott/Dobie mix.
