Hi everybody, first time poster. I got a golden retriever puppy (4 months old) a few weeks ago and he's been an amazing pet. Unfortunately, he's terrified of getting into the car. I've tried luring him in with treats, toys, anything and everything. He just sits down and won't budge. I've lifted him into the car a couple of times but he gets really stressed out, starts panting hard and shivering. He's the same way when I try to get him into his crate. What would you guys suggest? I'm taking him on a long trip next week and I don't want to stress him out like that again. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
My Golden Retriever is the same way. He is now 1 year old, but he still doesn't like cars. We kind off lift him up und carry him in. Benji is not scared of the crate, just the car. Our Benji is a little scary cat anyway. I don't have any suggestion for you how to fix the problem. Sorry. just a suggestion.. if your puppy isn't going to rip up anything that gets near his head, try covering his head with a dark towel or such and place him in the car, calmly talk to him and give him treats still with the towel over his eyes and when he seems comfortable, remove it, a treat or two still at hand for him. if he doesnt start stressing right away, praise him.
Well this is something I work on with all my dogs. I had a Pom that hated the car and would cry the entire ride. We go to the lakes on the weekends in the summer and yes all the dogs have to come with. It is an hour ride. So to get them used to riding. I first crate them on short trips.. Like picking my son up from football, basketball ect. when I know I am coming right home again. Yes at first they are nervous but I keep talking to them the entire ride. Sometimes I bring their toys or blanket, a comfort item. The pug puppies now sit on the seat next to me very calmly and love to go get my son from school. You probly don't have much time to work on this as it does takes several weeks to get them to adjust. There are medications one called " Quiet moments" by NaturVet it is a claming Aid for dogs & cats to help with periods of anxiety & stress. I have some samples but have never tried it LOL Jubilee
