Hi, This is a common problem, so maybe somebody has some good advice on how to beat ear infections. My springer has fought chronic ones for years. We give her lamb and rice Purina dog food. I try to keep her ear hairs clipped but what a fight!! I also try (but I admit not faithfully) to use an ear cleanser and gently clean her ears with cotton swabs. Any other ideas? Someone suggested Benadryl once a day to dry the ears out and stop her itching. Has anyone tried this? Any help greatly appreciated!
Our mixed breed dog Bowen gets ear infections. Actually pretty much any floppy eared dog is going to be prone to getting them, that's one of the reasons ear cropping became popular, it helps prevent ear infections because there's always open air circulating in the ear. A floppy eared dog has little air circulation, and the bacteria have a field day in that damp and dark environment. Ear infections are actually a type of yeast infection. I've *heard* that using monistat and such, like for women's yeast infections, will clear them up, but I haven't tried it. Instead, my vet recommended we use something called Clotrimazole cream. You can find it in walmart or any grocery store actually, over by the athletes foot cremes and powders, that's what it's used for. Clean the ear with a damp rag (but not with soap! it can actually worsen the problem). Then just spread a dollop of the cream on your finger and spread it carefully down into the ear canal and on the fleshy part of the inner ear. You should notice a difference after just one application. I'd use it 2 times in 1 day and it'll be gone.
First of all you have to keep them clean, also you need to get off the Purina!!!!!Yikes Go on Z/D Ultra from your Veterinarian for 6 months at least to see if any changes He may have food allergies which in some breeds like yours will show up in chronic ear infections, This food can be used on any dog that has strange chronic inf/allergies. If you later find that it did nothing still stay off Purina!!Yuck.Z/D Ultra and Z/D Low allergen are both are sold by your vet be sure you get Ultra. Also expect the food to be costlly, You cannot while on this food feed anything else NO TREATS OR ANY HUMAN FOOD. The money you spend is well worth it, the money you spend on vet bills and ear meds and pain and suffering will hopefully greatly reduced!!!!!!!!!!!! Sue
