smooshie - i will check that out. boy now it sounds like i am completely paranoid hunh ? cricketmom - i should download a firewall anyway shouldn't i ? even if its not necessary for this site ? hector - good. i am sure nala appreciated it. :)
In my humble opinion, if you browse the internet at all or have dedicated internet access (a T1, cable or DLSS connections) you need to have a firewall, antivirus software and an anti spyware program like 'adaware'. It's just safer.
Sorry Scout, I went out to dinner. Lets see if I can remember everything you asked. First if you aol, you do have the spyware, but it's not the best. I have both the spybot and aol. If you are getting dsl I would wait until then to download it, much much faster. You definately need a firewall no matter where you are on the web. I have road runner through time warner cable and it is really easy to install. Since you can't be on tomorrow I would call them in the morning and then they can walk you through it and if you decide to keep aol too you can get that through the dsl and it's only 14.95 a month. The aol 9.0 optimized, which is probably what took 9 hours to download through a cable modem takes about 5 minutes to do from scratch, and regular downloads will take a minute or less. Edit, I forgot to mention I'll check back in shortly. And the firewall that comes with windows xp is not that great. If I missed anything let me know. I have to help my daughter put her room back together, she painted her room today and now we have to put the furniture bach. BTW I let her paint in black with bright pink trim. Hmmm, I wonder how big of a hissy Steve will have when he comes back from his hunting trip. Oh well, that's what happens when you leave for two weeks. I figure it's her room and worst case is later on I'll have to throw another coat of paint on, no biggie! :)
gina that answered the questions i had, now i have another one. if i only pay 14 95 for aol instead of what i am paying now then do i have to pay for the time i am online with aol ? because being on this site as long as i am i will be poorer than i already am if thats even remotely possible. yes i have dial up and it took 9 hours. too bad i didn't wait for the dsl hookup. dang !!! i will wait for the dsl before i download the zonealarm that minniyar suggested and the spybot.
Scout, what will happen is that once your dsl is installed and you go to aol you can change the way you connect from dial up to broad band. aol has a new thing that you can sign up for, check it out under billing/payments, it's called bring your own provider, or something like that. So, if you are using someone else's dsl and you keep aol but run it through the other person's dsl it will only be 14.95 per month. That's for full unlimited access, of course you still have to pay for the dsl to that provider. I didn't want to give up my other addiction, pogo. com. lol. When everything is installed you will click on the E for internet explorer for your dsl homepage, and you will click on the A for aol if you want to go there, and it will still be broadband. Did that answer your question I hope? I already had the dsl when I put aol on this computer so it did it automatically, but you may have to do it yourself since it's already on there. I can walk you through it if you need me to. First after you get the dsl installed go to aol and see if it will just let you switch over to that, it will scan your computer and know that you are using a dsl connection instead of a dial up. You will be very happy with the dsl. I will NEVER go back to dial up.
I have used many of these - most work, but only for the smaller viruses. Spybot - Search & Destroy is one of the best ones out there and it couldn't even keep out IncrediFind. These are always good to have - but NONE of them are foolproof. Any tech support line will assure you of that.
Well, I used to have SOL... I mean AOL, and I hated it. Now I have SBC Yahoo! DSL & love it! I also downloaded ZoneAlarm for this big IP display thing. It works GREAT! But ansy, I know it is not foolproof, but pretty close to it! Il ove AdAware, and I hate Spybot. ---Allie the Chihuahua http://www.dogster.com/?41063 ---Mönica the Kitty http://www.catster.com/?57596 My LiveJournal: http://www.livejournal.com/users/shadowfawksie/
It's true that none are foolproof, but definately better than nothing. Scout, don't worry we'll get you fixed up. If the forum isn't up you can email me at if you need help, or you can email me anyway. We could do an im on aol if you need to, but I don't sign on there all the time so you'll either have to catch me there or email me and tell me to sign on to aol. my screen name there is I know I'm so original aren't I?
Well, my computer is and has always been protected with the firewall anti-virus etc. I am not going to do anything additional until I see what TP does. They were supposed to do this last Sunday, right? If they have not changed their minds about showing the IPs, I just don't understand that. If they do, they should be willing to provide options for us. The only reason I can see to display everyone's IP would be if we are all made moderators, and I am thinking NOT to that. I am just going to hide and watch. If I feel the water's safe I'll jump in. Until then, happy surfing.
cricketmom, i like DSL. i had dialup before that so i have nothing else to compare it to. it's sooooo fast, for my DD who does homework research on the internet, and i just got so tired of waiting forever with dialup. one of my few luxuries.
