Elie was trained on a regular chain choke collar. Lately she seems to cough alot when i use the choke chain. Im not rough with it, in fact i barely use it. Its more of a reminder. She does have a tendency to pull when i take her out even with the choke collar. I am switching her to a harness so there isnt pressure on her throat. What type of training collar should i use?
My friend who is a trainer highly recommends those prong collers. They look nasty but they really arnt, they are actually safer then choke chains and normal collers. They dont choke the dog , it just applies gentle pressure and is highly effective when used correctly. She even put one on her own neck and tried it and there was no choking whatsoever. I'm going to get one on my next payday.
Well, now that I've found this site I don't know if this was a good idea or not, but I trained Rusty and Bailey on a pinch collar. The theory was it doesn't put pressure on the windpipe, but pinches the skin if you pull on it. Now, if this was not a good thing to do please remember it was years before I found this site. It did work great though.
I've also used a prong collar on Bowen with a lot of success. He is a champion puller, and actually broke choke chains (he has an iron trachea or something). But the prong collar works, and works great. I can control him now with a choke collar and even a nylon collar, but using the prong collar initially reallly helped. The prong collar is the only thing that works on Paul.
