My schipperke is always searching for food, never appears satisfied, can not enjoy other activities for long. She eats her dog food and does not want more but looks and begs for other food. Is there any medication to help with compulsive/obsessive behavior?
For some breeds all it would take is her finding some food on the floor once and will always look. She was rewarded for scavenging by finding some food on the floor. Keep your floors clean and don't give treats or attention to her when she starts to scavenge. Have a place with a bed of hers to put her in a down stay.reward her for staying on the bed. Give her more exercise, get her interested in other activities with praise not treats. Dogs are creatures of habit. My male was out walking with me one time on a unframiliar road and he went up a driveway where a lady was standing, so of course he got some attention, that was his reward for going up the driveway.Even to this day over a year later he will pick this driveway to go up and look for the lady. I don't think its a compulsive disorder but if you did seek meds they are out there, they are similar to meds we would use. If your dog is really always hungry then it could be a thyroid condition. I hope you try the training first.Hope I helped a bit!
