A few weeks ago, I woke up and went throught to the front room. To my horror, my hamster Shaggy, was quite still and I thought he was dead. I ran to get my mum, and it turned out little Shaggy wasn't dead, as Mum gave him a few treats. When I came home from school, Mum sid she'd been speaking to a friend who owns a hamster, and her friend told her humans can put hamsters in trances. We moved Shaggy's cage into the kitchen and he was fine. However, now that it's almost winter, we moved him back into the living room. I usually wake up half an hour after my brother, but I've been waking up before him for the last few weeks. Shaggy's been in these "trances" each and every morning. Is is just the shock of me being up before my little bro, or is it something else? Please help!!
I don't know exactly what you mean by him being in a "trance." It is normal for hamsters to stay very still when they are startled by something..they stay very still and just kind of listen for a few seconds and then they continue to do whatever they were doing before...could it be this is what your hamster is doing?
I don't really think it's too serious. He just goes in a trance for about 5-10 minutes, but is ok after I give him a treat!!!! My other hamster, Chocolate, never did that. Neither have any of my friend's hamsters. I just suppose Shaggy's a strange hamster. Oh, he's a Syrian hamster. And he's not dead. Yet.
It happens. I had a hamster that did that a lot in the past. But the hamster I have now.. she used to freeze a lot when any kind of other animal was around, do you have any other pets? She also sometimes gets starttled, if someone picks her up too fast or something, and might freeze for like 2-3 minutes. I guess it kinda seems like she's in a "trance". I think it's just natural instincts though. I just pick mine up, pet her, talk to her for a few minutes then give her a cookie lol. She loosens right up. I wouldn't worry about anything being serious. Just make sure to handle him often and make him feel that it's okay.
