I only eat poultry (and pepperoni on my pizza...gotta have that). But there's really no reason for it except that i don't like seafood, red meat and pork and i LOVE vegetables. so it's just a natural way for me to eat
I am. I've been one for 12 years. Not for religious reasons but it's a mind thing with me. I can't swallow meat! The look of it bothers me. Strange I know. I eat eggs, not by themselves, and drink milk, but no red meat, fish or fowl.
Scout, I was teased mercilessly for having a coke for breakfast all the way from college until I quit my job in July. I just can't help it. If you get the plastic 20 oz bottles and drink about 1/4 of it and put it in the freezer for a couple of hours it is so good. You need straws too. I have one every night while I'm sitting here talking to y'all. I have one in the freezer right now.
I don't think Id' make it as a vegetarian/vegan. I love dairy, but I don't like seafood, unless it's fried. ha! My mom fixes fish maybe once a week, I eat it cause it's good for the heart but it can be so nasty! I don't have a problem with people hunting and people raising cows for milk, etc. I just don't think they deserve to be treated like they are. They don't need to suffer. =/ I would NEVER accompany anyone on a hunting trip.
and you know what else is nasty? people who eat cats and dogs in korea and places like that. If I were starving and I had to eat my cat or dog(s) to live, I'd rather die.
I have been a vegitarian since i was 15. I am now 28. 13 years. In health class they had to talk about it and it appealed to me. Also it was a way for me to rebel against my parents. I came from carnivores. I am a lacto pollo vegitarian. Lacto means i drink milk and eat dairy products. Pollo means i eat chicken and turkey. I do not eat fish, beef, pork, or any other types of red meat. I raise and eat my own chickens. The parts i dont eat i feed to Digger and Elie. I dont eat eggs. The eggs i get from my chickens i give away or sell.
The biggest reason i dont eat meat is because of the way the animals are treated in the factories. I have seen what happens to them and how they are slaughtered. Its downright cruel. (No offense to the TP member who works in a slaughterhouse.) I cut my chickens heads off with an axe so it is quick and painless. I also dont eat meat because it is healthier. I also go to a local dairy for milk.
I to suffer from anemia. It has nothing to do with me being a vegitarian. My anemai is due to health problemsthat run in my family. It is possible to get enough iron from vegetables. It takes alot of careful planning of meals though. To make sure i get enough vitamins i take different supplements.
On thing i want to clear up is there is different types of vegitarians. Vegans dont consume meat, eggs, dairy, or use any type of animal products.
gina i never met anyone who drinks as much soda as i do. and also never someone who likes to freeze theirs. it stinks though when i put a can in the freezer and forget about it. what a mess !!!!!!!!!!!!
I am a vegetarian. I do not eat any meat, or anything that came from a dead animal, including geletan. I will eat/drink organic milk, cheeses, etc, though. I believe it is wrong to bring animals into this world only to force them to live a live in abuse until they are brutely murdered for the consumption of greedy people.
I love veggies but there is just no way I could give up meat.....especially beef (the bloodier the better). I'm also a big fan of Venison and Moose (I grew up in a very rural part of NB Canada).....oh and Soda (well 'pop' as we call it in Canuckland) is my enemy...I have been TRYING to give it up for years (especially Coke) but I just can't seem to help myself. I am a nutritionists worst nightmare ;-)
I majored in animal science production in college, so I know all about slaughtering techniques. In fact, there's classes on it. I've taken classes in Beef Production, Meat Selection and Grading (ironically I took that class the same quarter I took Mate Selection and Marital Interaction, which I fondly refered to as Mate Selection and Grading), Meat Processing, and Meat Science, as well as Biochemistry and Nutrition. Basically about the only thing I didn't do in my courseload was actually slaughter an animal (though I could have, we are given the option to do so as part of the learning procedure and I opted not to).
Nothing I saw or experienced did a thing to reduce my liking for any kind of meat or meat product or even make me feel guilty for liking meat. We eat beef, pork, chicken, and seafood on a regular basis (one of each at least once a week). But we also eat balanced diets with lots of grains, vegetables (broccoli and brussel sprouts are my absolute favorites)
I think that vegan diets in particular are unnatural. To anyone who says otherwise, I say this. If the diet is natural, why does it require that children and mothers heavily supplement with vitamins and minerals or they will have serious health issues?
However, as long as people don't complain about me being cruel for eating meat, I have no issues or problems with people who choose for whatever reason not to eat meat. I've made my choice, they've made theirs =)
Oh, I am anemic as well, countrygal, and I have not had any problems with being a vegetarian. Chocolate and raisins are high in iron, so I just eat a lot of stuff like that. I get protein from nuts. I am with boxerbabe on the whole definitions on vegetatians and vegans. I know my reply is a bit late, but I haven't been around here much today yet. I have very strong belifs on this.
"Alphonse - if you don't mind me asking, what is your religion? I love to learn new things."
I'm hindu. I still don't mind eating chicken or pork once in a while but beef is a big no-no in my family. But I have eaten beef accidentaly more than a few times. Its not like im going to hell for it, but I wish those goddamn McDonald workers would listen to me more carefully since i repeat it like 25 times !!! ;)
I have never really liked the way meat tastes, so I mostly only eat chicken and seafood. In college, all my friends became vegetarians and I limited myself to seafood only (I really don't even like chicken that much, just as a good beef substitute). Then, I moved to the south. People from the south, ya'll know it's impossible to be a vegetarian here. I am eating chicken more and more, but since I don't like beef, that's about as un-vegetarian as I have become (although i did have a beef and cheese burrito from taco bell...)
Scout, listen and repeat after me. I will not put a can drink in the freezer. I will buy the plastic bottles.
OMG I would hate to see what happened to your freezer.
Deven, my son, sees me do this all the time. The other day he got some wierd drink at the grocery store that came in a metal can that was shaped like an old milk bottle. Well, he decided to freeze it, like mom. That thing split right down the middle. Learned a lesson there. Plastic only!
I'm in grade 12 right now, and i've been a vegetarian since grade 7. Well....i stopped eating most meat, and fish in grade 7. but i still ate chicken and eggs up until the summer between grade 9 and 10. Since then i haven't eaten any meat whatsoever. i do however still drink milk and eat milk prodects so i'm not a complete vegan. i stopped eating meat because as soon as i thought about the animal i felt sick, and i just really didn't like the taste. i'm not the type of person to try and convert everyone else....everyone has they're own opinions and have different tastes. but i do get bothered when people try to get me to eat me. i eat a lot of different things. we got a vegetarian cook book that my dad uses for me. believe it or not there is a lot of meals that vegetarians can get. it's just a little harder when going out for dinner to pick somethign!
boxerbabe - yes i've heard to that a lot of vegetarians are anaemic. i was anaemic when i was 6 months old...but didn't stop eating meat until 7th grade....maybe my body could see into the future. lol
kerrinicole - about not wanting to me rude to your mom, just tell her how you feel. i just went up to my parents and told them "mom, dad, nothing against you or your cooking, but i really don't like the taste of meat and would prefer if i didn't have to eat it" and they were fine with it. didn't understand it, but they were fine. in fact they were glad that i told them and did't continue to eat something i didn't like.
as for the ppl that go hunting - i have nothing against you and know lots of people that do. i would just prefer if you didn't tell me about it, show it to me, or try and make me eat it.
i know that hunting and eating meat is natural for humans and that it was done by our anscstors (mega sp) but it's jut not for me. the main reason i became vegetarian was the taste....i just don't like it. i don't try to force people to become vegetarian and people now know to not try and get me to eat meat. but just b/c i don't eat it, doesn't mean i don't expect others to. i sit at the table everynight with the 4 other ppl in my family while they eat meat.
now as for dairy products i will NEVER give those up....ya right, me go without ice-cream....ha
I am not vegetarian. I did however grow up in the Seventh-Day Adventist church which of course is vegetarian so all throughout elementary school and college I ate vegetarian food. My parents at home were not vegetarians so we ate meat for dinner and such. Honestly I wish there was a food I didn't like (except for asparagus)...I would rather have a veggie pizza then one with meat. I eat vegetarian breakfast sausages because regular are so greasy. I'm baptist now and you should see the carnivourous spread at a baptist potluck...lol...
As for animal rights...hmmm...loaded question of course and I know people have such strong feelings about this. I believe the Lord created them and put man in charge of them. If we need their meat or fur or skin for survival then by all means but we are also given a charge to treat them kindly. Abuse & mistreatment is NOT ok.
