i have 2 american eskimos- a toy 15# and a mini 13#. for being in public, harness and 4 ft lead. for a fun walk, harness and either a 4 or 6 ft lead, or a retractible, whichever i can find at that moment. we dont take many walks, they usually just run around in the yard.
I think it depends on the size/strength of the dog as well as its discipline on the leash. I use a harness on my eskie - retractable leash for fun walks and 4' lead for public. I had a lab once and for training, I used the pinch collar. If used correctly, it is a wonderful thing to have. He was trained easily with that and I was able to walk him - without having my arm pulled off! I've also heard of the head harness (I can't remember what it's called), and that seems to help as well. There are others here who have experience with that as well as other methods. Good luck!
Ivan always has his collar on when he is outside wether he is on a leash or halter....I am so paranoid about loosing my baby. When we are just going out to use the bathroom I just use a regular leash or expandable leashe with his collar. If we are going to PetSmart or on an actual walk I use his slip halter. It is a halter designed to tighten around his waist rather that his neck when he pulls. He is a french bulldog, so we don't want to put too much strain on his throat.
I sometimes use a dog vest or a dog show lead. With my mutt he doesn't use either. He walks without a lead when I am with him because he doesn't leave my side. He is a good dog. A vest is this mesh thing with a handle that they wear at the shows when they aren't actually being shown. It has a handle so if the dog is endangered (big dog running loose) I can just pick them up. It also has a leash clip.
Also, when my mutt does walk with me without a leash, he always has his collar on. And my neighbourhood isn't busy either.

i have a ton of paraphenalia to walk the dogs. for potty breaks and short walks around the block i use scouts buckle collar and flexi lead. for walks in the woods i use the flexi lead and prong collar.
for walks in public or trips to the pet store i use her half nylon 1.2 choke chain collar and the matching leash. for training classes i use the 1/ mylon leash or the prong collar and her leather leash. all her collars and leashes are kept in my car on the vack floor. so they are ready no matter where we are.
i personally hate the flexi lead. you have less control over them with it. but it is good for walks in the woods so she can explore without dislocating my shoulder.
It definitely depends on the dog. I was told by the emergency vet that I took my bulldog to that they should always be on a harness because of their respiratory problems. They should never have anything constrictive like a collar around their necks.
On Loki I used to use a Gentle Leader. Now I use a nylon Martingale and a 4 foot nylon lead.
Lyra has a no pull harness and a 4 foot nylon lead.
I DO use a flexi and a flat buckle collar if we're going to an unpopulated area so they have room to stretch out and explore. I won't use any sort of correction collar with the flexi because its too easy for them to sustain a neck injury.

I use a little harness and a retractable leash for my chihuahua. And for my pug mix, who is way stronger and pulls like no other, I have a regular cloth collar and a 8" cloth leash. I was going to try a choke collar for her, but she's going to obedience in January and the ppl at the obedience school said to wait until she starts obedience to use a choke collar because it will be more effective or something. They said Ill know how to use it better then.
I live in the country (but in a subdivision) so my dogs walk in my yard without leashes. If I go out in public I do use leashes. For my Chow Chow mix (Alex) I usually use a nylon collar and matching thick nylon leash. For my mini American Eskimo (Kai) I use his nylon collar and a retractible leash with the cleanup bags in the handle. Those come in handy since Kai goes with me everywhere.
For my pug puppy, Blaze, I use a harness and an extendable leash when were going for a casual walk. When I bring him out to the potty I usually have a normal nylon lead so I can keep control and at the same time let him wander a bit. He's just a little baby so I only need a collar for that. When we go for walks I'm a little bit more paranoid. For my Labradoodle, Ginger, I use a halter and a flexi lead. She's a good girl, and she likes to explore and wander without hurting anything. I usually let her run out to the potty herself, so she needs no guidance over that. If were going to a real public area, I use a sturdy nylon leash with a soft hand holder (it's the new version) for the person who's holding the leash and it's really comfortable.
I use leather flat collars for all my dogs. I use flat nylon leashes for the little ones and braided nylon leashes for my doberman. It all works well. I don't have their collars on very often though. Just when we're going on a walk or on a ride.
