Does anyone know if dogs remeber other dogs that they haven't seen in a long time? I am thinking of bringing my brothers dogs over while he is at work, but my dogs have not seen his dogs in almost a year. Would they have to get to know each other all over again? If so, any ideas on how to make it go smoothly, I wouldn't want a dog fight to break out.
Im not sure if they remember. A year is a long time...maybe though...they might recognize the familiar scent or something. I would just make sure to have to dogs on leashes at first to make sure they are okay with one another. And don't leave them alone at all, because you never know if one tries to take the others bone or toy or something. Just be careful =-)
i believe they do remember. when i lived at home before getting married my mom had 2 dogs and i had 1. when i moved out my dog would go and stay there when we went away on little trips. my moms dogs always remembered my dog and the younger one still always tried to pick on him just like she did when we lived there. they all acted the same with each other. mom and dad turned my bedroom into an office and even though it didn't look the same, my dog knew that used to be our room and would only eat in that room when he stayed there. so i thinkg they remember alot more then we think they do/would.
Well, they may remember each other. The way to make it go really smoothly is to have them meet on "neutral" ground. That is, where none of them would have territorial issues and get all defensive. Keep them on leashes and let them sniff each other and get to know each other that way. It may take 1/2 hour, it may take 10 min. But that is the way to do it. We have 3 dogs and none of them have been together forever. We also invited some friends of ours over to have a play date on Sunday. They have a full-grown Great Dane and a 4 mo Mastiff. I have a doberman, rat terrier, and chi/pug mix. We were worried they wouldn't get along but after meeting in the front yard of my house, they were fine and we let them play in the fenced in backyard. Then we let them in the basement, where we all sat and watched them play. It all turned out great. Hope this advice helps you!!
