For any one with a dog who doesn't like nail trims: A Lady I see on a reg basis had a hard time clipping her dogs nail so I gave some advise that worked like a charm...suggested that she teach the dog to associate the nail clippers with a good thing- a delicious treat. First she was told to leave the clippers next to his food dish for a week or so.(Through this course the clippers were kept by the bowl the whole 6 weeks in between clippings) The next stage was to give him a treat as she picked up his paw and touched one toe(for one week, each paw). The third stage was to clip one nail and then give him a treat(for one week). After about 6 weeks all she had to do was pick up the clippers and the dog would run downstairs where she usually fed him and clipped his nails.
Hey sue, thanks for the tip! I have a chi/terrier mix that screams like you're killing him when he gets his nails clipped. Usually I have my husband hold him and talk softly to him while I do the trimming, but he still acts like he being killed. I've never quicked him, so I know it's not because he's been hurt (he's just a big baby!). I'll give this a go!
i got mine use to it by putting a small jar of baby food chicken or turkey in front of them, while they licked i cut.. worked great, now it doesn't bother her at all. we don't use the baby food any more.
