I recently purchased a baby hamster named Panda from a pet shop. He is supposed to be the "runt" and is very weak but demands attention every day. He is the smallest hammy I've ever seen. When I get up to pour some grains and a few shreds of hamster grass into his bowl in the morning, I notice he is always active and squeaky, except for when it's bedtime. He prances around on his exercise wheel happily when I talk to him. I gave him a few hamster treats today and he was squeaking like crazy, his little pink nose twitching. I let him loose in my room normally when I get home from school and let him crawl up onto my shoulder and investigate my room. I have been wondering why he is so active when my hamster book said hamsters sleep all day?! I have a dog and three cats that arent nearly as demanding as him.
He also does not wee as much as most hamsters do, and he drinks gallons of water from his little water bottle! He eats alot of food, more than I expected, and I barely have to change his bedding because of how he scarcely dirties it.
i don't see anything wrong at all. we used to have a hamster that would be awake all day as well. that little guy would run on his wheel all day and sleep all night. i woudn't worry to much about it....just be thankful you can sleep at night!
Our hamster, Dudley is the same way. He loves to play, he does sleep during the day but only brief periods. He is up alot at night and his wheel is sooo loud. It is plastic so we can't even oil it or anything. Dudley is getting older, he is 2 years old now and most hamsters live to be around two, so Dudley is not the most active hamster but he was when he was younger. We got him at 8 months old, we adopted him from the shelter! OP, I would say your hamster is fine.
My hamster Madison recently had six little ones, and I have found that when they are really young such as after they first get there hair they are a lot more active during the day. After mine got full grown they kind of settled back into the normal hamster sleep all day play all night routine. Also what kind of hamster is yours? Mine are dwarf hamsters which are alot smaller than most hamsters, they also seem to be awake a lot more and more active than the large type hammies I have owned in the past. Well enjoy this little guy while you can before he decides to nap the day away LoL!
