Hi guys, I have a quick question about grooming. I just got the courage to cut my pups nails yesterday while he was napping. I was just afraid of cutting them too short and hurting him. So I just cut the tips off. Anyway my question is. He has very furry paws. Like growing out between his pads so pretty much the whole bottom of his foot is fur. Are you supposed to trim this or is it fine as is?? I'm thinking about taking him to a groomer as I don't know much about grooming. What kinds of things do they do at the groomer and how much do they generally charge?? I'm sure it depends on what they do but like lets say they have a package or something?? bath, brush, nail trim?? not sure since i've never been . Thanks for any info you can give! Also, right now he gets 1 bath a week and I brush and blow dry him after. Just trimed his nails yesterday for the first time. Don't know how often that needs done either. His coat is fairly low maintenience, his ears need brushed a little more often than his body. Just wanna know if it'll be worth going to the groomer or do it myself. Or do most people usually use groomers for the high maintenence dogs? Thanks!
I can tell you one thing- your baths are way too often. It will dry out the skin. I do not know the other questions answer because I, too have just started trimming nails, but do not have fur like that. Dogs should be bathed once a month. Ella's mom
Ok thanks for the bath info. I have only had him for about 5-6wks. The first 3 baths were once a week but he hasn't had one in awhile. The paperwork I got with the dog said English Toy Spaniels need bathed once a week and brushed. Thats all the hair grooming they need. Good thing I posted because I would think once a month was too little.
English Toy Spaniel, gorgeous little fellows. The hair between your little guy's pads and toes needs to be trimmed, but scissors are sharp and little pads are tender. As a groomer I frequently teach people the correct/safe way to trim nails, and tidy feet. I am sure if you approached a groomer in your area they would teach you as well. Call around until you find someone who will. When you take your pup to a groomer to be done the groomer will comb any mats out of his coat, clip his nails, tidy his coat and feet, clipping his armpits and groin area, pluck his ears if necessary, bath him and dry him. A lot of groomers will express anal glands as well. Charges vary depending on where you live.
Thanks so much TJ. I figured about the trimming of the hair on the feet just wanted to make sure. I've been lucky so far in keeping him mat free. But the other stuff I wouldn't even think of doing. What about brushing teeth?? Do they do that too? We have a place around the corner called the yuppie puppie which I will probably take him to. I never knew groomers did so much. I'm guessing it's probably pretty expensive especially since I live in Hawaii. But, if it only needs done once a month or so no biggie at all. Thanks so much for all the info! I'll be giving them a call on Monday.
I give my cocker a bath every three weeks. she goes to the groomer on the sixth week. i just bathe and brush, the groomer does the rest. the nails i do once in a while, but normally they arent long enough til she goes to the groomer. about brushing teeth, we do this like 2 times a week, get a pet tooth paste and brush. she loves it, helps that the paste is flavored for her.
