i have two 8 month old bostons, is it there nature? the female is constantly eating the poop dispite my constant attempts at keeping it picked up, she still manages to find some i miss (we have a big yard), and i have tried DETER and to NOOOO avail.
i can always tell when she got into some cause it smells like a plastic on her breath and later she gets sick.
i feed them twice a day to their fill, natural choice puppy, they get treats, water, attention, what the heck kind of satisfaction is she getting out of constantly doing this?
i have been keeping them both in the house because of this and whenn i take them out i watch them and make them come right back in and then it warmed up a little and i cleaned the darned yard as good as i could and then i let them go out and play and she must of found some from the last day or so that i did not get picked up yet and now i guess i wont have to.
she would be great at keeping the yard cleaned and i would not have to pick it up anymore but then she comes in and wants to lick me and that is just too disgusting, uggggh.
You have already tried what I was going to suggest. You can try to add garlic powder to the food sometimes that works as a deterant to eating ones stool ( have to give it to both dogs). Maybe a change in diet.? Yuk your right no doggie kisses anymore :(
That is not the puppy breath I have been talking about. No matter what the reason it is disgusting, and a lot more common that I ever realized. I wish I had a quick fix for you. Good luck with whatever you try, but for now YUK!
hectorluver3: no disrespect here, but is that a proven fact about the protein? my puppy eats her poop too(so gross), and everything i have read on the causes has been theoretical(sp?). someone(sorry, can't remember who) had some great advice to simply take your dog out on a leash to poop therefore being in control when the dog goes for it. good luck, monica, let me know when you figure it out, cuz i miss giving my cutie kisses too:(. oh, and what about the vinegar & water squirt bottle trick, have you tried that?

Bessie, good point. I am not sure anyone really knows, or if there is one single reason dogs do this. I think if someone knew this for a fact, could bottle it and sell it they would be rich. I have hear it is because there is undigested food in the poo, but I don't know if that is true. My dogs don't do that, but I have seen dogs that do. It is just disgusting to us. Apparently not as disgusting to them. I think about this everytime I read where someone's dogs won't eat their food.
Sprinkle on poo to deter them: -Cayenne pepper or hot sauce -vinegar OR Mixed with their food, once digested these things make their poo bitter: -pinapple juice (has to be 100%) -deter pills (if they're not working for you, ask the vet if you can up the dosage) Health reasons (my vet said): -pancrease problems -not getting enough nutrients in their food Other reasons (these fall under the theoretical): -boredom, being alone a lot -not being properly potty trained, so being ashamed of it and trying to 'get rid of the evidence'
I'm a big vinegar spray advocate as well. I think what you should do is try to catch him in the act and spray him in the face with vinegar and say no.
Nikki, petshop dogs are notorious for that. It's because their whole life up until they are bought by someone they are in little kennels. It's against a dog's instinct to sleep where they use the bathroom, so since they are forced to, oftan times they start to eat it just to keep their area clean and it starts a lifetime habit of doing it. Another reason is that oftan the dogs are in kennels with other dogs and have to compete for food. So when they don't get their share, they get really hungry and that poo just looks more and more appealing.
Hectorluver3, no of course, i was just asking because i would like to know. as i said, i have read only theories(none of which really applied to my pup) no proven facts. even miniyar said it was just one of those things. i'd love to know, however, so i too can get my cute puppy to quit her gross habits.
I'm sure there are other people on here that own Bostons and they would beg to differ..which I would welcome them to, since I have never owned one before in my life and know NOTHING about the breed what-so-ever...although my neighbor has 2 Bostons...they are hillarious dogs, coinsidence? They both eat their poo...sometimes they get out and squeeze between my fence and play with my girls...EWWW I hate that..because then not only do they have doggy slobber all over them..but they have doggy pooooooo turd, nasty slobber on them! Cricket said it best....YUCK!!!!
Oh and BTW...good ideas huntersmom, vinegar queen!
think of all the disgusting things dogs eat. rotten smelly things, bark, twigs, leaves, old fish, dead birds, why not poop too? sometimes i think they just like to eat it.
what worked for me when i had my lab on a veggie diet to check for allergies and she started eating poop, was to sprinkle Accent the meat tenderizer stuff on her food. i'd moisten the food a little to make it stick. she stopped right away.
I just bought an English Bulldog; puppy. She is sooo cute. We also have 2 cats and unfortunately one of my cats is sick and had really bad diahrea. Well, sorry but I am about to gross everyone out. My cat did the ultimate nasty diahrea on the floor. I had to run to the store and when I came back, it was all GONE! My dog ate it. How freaking disgusting!!! We keep her locked in the bathroom all day while we are at work and I left her out for 30 minutes and this happens. Guess I cannot leave her out at all when we are not home.
the pancreas problem could have some truth behind it. my mothers one shepherd has a pancreatic insufficiency for which he takes pills for and he is a big poop eater. her other shpherd does not have this problem and she does not eat her poop.
