So my girlfriend has a co-worker that invited her and my dog Sabian to a doggie b-day party at a dog park on Saturday. I had to work during the party so couldn't attend. While at the dog park my bully was having a grand ol' time playing with the co-workers boxer and other various dogs.
Random guy at the park comes along with a Husky. Unleashed, uncollared, not muzzled. When the husky gets close to the other dogs he shows some level of aggression towards any that comes near. The owner does nothing. My girlfriend sees the aggression and keeps my dog close by on harness and leash. My dog goes to get water from HIS bowl and the husky comes over and starts drinking from it and then displays aggression towards my dog for wanting a drink from his own bowl. My girlfriend tells the guy to get his dog under control. He doesn't. Minutes later as my Girlfriend is packing up to leave the guys husky come by yet again. Sabian turned towards him and the husky unleashed. Baring teeth, full on growling bark and bit Sabian on the neck and then changed grip and got him on the head, cutting Sabians eyelid quite deeply. The cut is about an inch long and very deep.
The guy with the husky said NOTHING. No I'm sorry, no is he ok, didn't even leash or collar his dog. Suffice it to say that my Girlfriend was freaked out so much by the blood she packed him into the car and was out of there. She normally would have unloaded on the guy with various strings of highly offensive expletives, but was too worried about Sabian. Had I been there in all likelihood, I would be either in jail or at my arraignment.
So tell me how is it that a dog that shows this much aggression on numerous occasions is not muzzled? I am convinced that this was not the first showing of aggression for this dog and feel this guy should have had the damn thing muzzled. End result is, I came home from work and looked at the wound and although quite deep I think it will heal fine. He did however look like Rocky Balboa for the rest of the day. Come this morning you can barely see the wound so he should be fine.
OMG Ash, that is just awful. I would probably have reacted the same as you say you would have. Is there anyway you can contact this person? Probably not. I sure hope the wounds heal nicely. I would still be very upset.
That's one of the reasons I won't take my 4 to a dog park. Some people just don't care about the welfare of other people's dogs. Now what would have happened if someone elses dog had attacked his? I'm sure he would have had something to say then.
Plus, I have 3 Great Danes, and I can't imagine the damage they could do to another dog if provoked enough. I have a little 60 lb. mix, Sky, and Horatio can fit her entire head in his mouth. He could kill her in a heart beat if he wanted to.
I'm sorry your dog was hurt, but I'm glad he seems ok today.
In a way that's why I'm against dog parks. Irresponsible dog owners take advantage of it by letting aggressive dogs run amuck. They think since it's a dog park it's THEIR RIGHT to do so. Most city ordinances still enforce an aggressive dog to be contained and muzzled even in a designated dog park.
I would make a complaint to the city's Parks and Recreations department against the guy. I'm sure he will be back again and with a good discription of the person and the dog from you, they will be banned from the park. Also the owner may even be cited with a violation.
People like that just ruin a good thing by acting so stupid.I hope your doggie is fine. If you treat the wound yourself, make sure to keep some antiseptic on it. Dog bites are the worse as far as getting infection. Antibiotics might not be a bad idea. If you do go to the Vet, I'd be sure to give the guy the vet bill if you ever see him.
i'm with you PitPat2Az. i had a horrible, horrible experience at a dog park that really affected my dog's socialization. little lola, a samoyed/lab mix was only 4 months old when we took her, and it was my first time, so we were both excited about it. the park itself was rather nasty, all muddy from the rain, mixed with poop from all the dogs. we were there probably ten minutes before this big rott came over and started bullying lola, who of course was quite submissive, but this dog wouldn't lay off. i got kinda nervous as the rott was getting more aggressive, and as i walked over the help her up, the rott full on attacked. of course then the whole dog park got into it, and pretty soon there was a dogpile. i was screaming bloody murder at the dogs and no one was doing anything! i was so pissed off. finally the rott owner pulled his dog off and the rest of the dogs dispensed. lola was totally covered in mud and s***, had bite marks on her nose, and was needless to say completely frightened. i asked the rott owner who the bleep he thought he was, and he told me to calm down, it was her INITIATION. no one else would even look at me! i picked up my soggy dog, told them all to go you know where, and was outta there. after that she was a complete wreck around other dogs for a long time. sorry so long, it just really upset me. i wish i had done something at the time besides cuss everyone out:).
ash- could you try stopping by the park periodically and seeing if the man is there? you could either confront him, or get a license plate so you (or proper authorities) could fine him when you lodge a complaint.
also, call animal control with any info you have. in my area, after 3 incidents of aggression the dog is put down, the first two are very hefty fines and all.
Thanks for the responces guys. I intend to go to this park with my girlfriend, minus the dog to try and find this guy. I really wish I had been able to be there as this would already be cleared up. I just don't understand the level of ignorance people have to not even say I am sorry. I mean come on. His eye is fine though, it's scabbed up and cleaned and has an atibiotic on it. He will have a scar but a small one. I would have been curious to see what the guy would have done had Sabian instinctively turned on his fight to the death, feel no pain instinct. I am sure we would have gotten a reaction from him then. I just hope that this doesn't hinder Sabian's socializing skills. He is an absolute attention hound and thinks that everyone loves him and needs his love. I think he found out that there are some Male dogs that are (insert naughty word)'s.
As for sabian's name, his registered name is actually Sir Winston, but we named him Sabian. This comes from a movie with Kevin Spacey, Negotiator I think? Anyway that was Spacey's characters name in the movie. I have just always liked the name. Thanks again for the well wishes.
