My dog got out of her panties and out of the yard and got pregnant accidentally. I can't afford to get a doggie abortion and it was during her first heat. I have already given 5 unborn puppies REALLY good homes to my very close friends. I heard that most likely all her puppies will be born dead since it was her first heat. Is that true? also will it kill her to have puppies when she is only 11mos. old?
Im not sure...Ive never had a pregnant dog before. I have never heard of the puppies being born dead, but I have heard that since the mom is so young she may not know exactly what to do to care for them. But Im not even sure that's true. Sorry Im not more of a help, someone else will probably be able to help.
BTW, have your dog spayed to avoid this happening again.
It is more a matter of the females maturity, and being able to feed, care, etc, for pups at that age. What kind is she, and what did she mate to? There is a concern if she is a smaller breed, and the male was a larger breed. Are you sure she is pregnant? Have you taken her to a vet. If she is, you should have a quick flash x-ray or ultrasound done a week or so before giving birth. Then you will know how many she's supposed to have. It is just like a human female, she may be old enough physically, but is she mature enough mentally. Let us know how it goes.
Best of luck to you. I have not heard that all the pups will be born dead, and also have never had a pregnant dog. If you are still considering a doggie abortion, there are organizations where you can have it done for cheap or free. Do a google search for "free low cost spay neuter" plus the name of your state or town and see what you come up with.
Thanks everyone so much for replying to me. She is half pitbull half lab mix, my best friends dog is the one that got her pregnant and he is a pure bred american pit bull with papers, so was her mother. Scrappy (the male) is slightly bigger than Marley (my dog). She is very needy and I'm not at all sure that she is mature enough. How can you tell? I thought that it was just a maternal instinct for her to care for her puppies. My best friend and I have both agreed to be there for her during the pregnancy and birth. Will that help her to understand what she should do if we are there to give her a push?
The puppies should be fine if all goes well in the Pregnancy and delivery I never heard of all the puppies being dead cause she is so young. The big problem is she is way to immature to be a mother, she will mature alot when she has the pups and becomes a mother, but not enough. HOPEFULLY the pregnancy didnt take and you can fix her so it doesn happen again
JAQ, a lot of her instincts will depend on how she was raised by her mother and when she left the mother? Is she around other dogs? Does she lick and clean other dogs if you have them and does she clean herself well (like when she was in heat) ? I'm sorry, but I do not know yours or your friends experience level at whelping puppies. Don't think that she will instinctively know what to do with newborns. After the first one is born, let her try to open the sac herself, but keep an eye on her as she does. If she doesn't open it, you'll have to. Let her eat 1-3 placentas also. It will stimulate milk production. Let your vet know right away that you'll be expecting puppies on such and such day, and that you may need an assist. Have her x-rayed a week before birth to find out how many pups to expect. Find all you can about whelping, supplies you need, behavior leading up to the whelp, etc. on-line. There are some great sites out there.
Hope it's a pseudopregnancy. But if not, consider the cost of whelping the puppies and potential complications compared to a spaying and abortion. The spaying is probably much cheaper and it should be done, anyway.
