Hope someone can help. First time owning an American bulldog--she's just over a year and has starting developing perfectly circular red bumps. They're raised, dry and not hot spots (she can't reach some). One is the size of a silver dollar, the others are smaller but growing.
For some reason bully breeds, Pits, and staffs etc seem to suffer from allergies, and they show the symptoms through the skin,& ears. Most likely a food allergy. Some like hives, red sores, do you see any crusting around the edges of the circular sores. The Vet will probly give you anti histamines, but long term is not the answer. But do have the vet check it and get some relief, especially if he's scratching. There is a Venison(deer) diet out that I've noticed. I've seen at least 2 brands with this mixture. One is Wellness and one (Natures Balance?) They are no corn or wheat either/ Anyway if you searched on the net I'm sure you'd find a few brands. The Veterinarian does sell a Z/D formula as well, if you want to go through the vet. I tried the Venison formula on my Frenchie and he had no reactions to it, and he was on it for a month. His allergies are really bad.
I used to have a pit bull/beagle cross who always had kind of oily skin and bad odor. The odor was not so bad after spaying, but she always had various sores, a lot on her ears.
Turns out she had lupus. Put her on a special diet, which helped for a few years. When she was 11 she just got so bad, was snapping when I would try to medicate her ears, not recognizing my husband when he came home from work, not eating. The vet suggested amputating her ears! I elected to put her down peacefully. I stayed with her and stroked her head and said goodbye.
Crowbar was a great dog and a great ambassador for the bully breeds. She was the best dog in her CGC class!
