Sorry I'm on a morbid streak lately, but I find dog attacks somewhat fascinating...
"I don't blame it on their upbringing. I was a good owner." says Jacqueline McCuen, whose three dogs mauled a woman so badly that eight firefighters needed counseling afterwards.
I came across a video of Jacqueline McCuen crying and sobbing-- I do admit, she did at least apologize for the death her animals caused, but in the video it shows one of her children frolicing with one of her dogs that wasn't part of the rampage. After saying she was convinced her dogs weren't violent and having "no idea" what caused them to attack and kill Jennifer Brooke, aged 40, she STILL has dogs and is letting her small children play with them!?
I only have one question; would you prefer the flowers for the kid's casket to be white or pink?
The lady was completely irresponcible letting the dogs out and it is horrible that someone died because of it. The dogs probally never would have done a thing to her kids. You can't be sure but they probally attacked the lady because they had a pack mentality going on. When dogs are in a pack they are much more likely to attack someone or something. I'm not sure why they allow her to keep more dogs though. I thought after you got in trouble for having dangeroues dogs you couldn't have anymore? I am so sick of people making pits look bad though. If she would have taken proper care of them then this never would have happened. Now people can use that to say pits are horrible animals. I didn't even catch it till I watched the video but she had a dog bite someone before. SHe doesn't need to own a dog. She has five kids and four dogs in one picture. There is no way those dogs were being watched and trained correctly.
She later received 6 years in jail-- I would normally want to ignore the breed issue (I'm trying to behave!) but it is a factor because I think the "Dangerous dog" charge was brought about because pit bulls were banned where she lives, which multiplied the litigation against her by quite a bit and increased her prison time.
Now those kids aren't going to have to probably be put into foster homes and split up, and another woman is dead, all because she couldn't fix her stupid fence.
If pit bulls weren't banned in her area, I apologize, but if they were...
This story is a classic example of how breed bans won't be very effective. The law-abiding citizens who would most likely properly train and take care of their dogs won't be able to keep them,(punished for the bad apples) meanwhile, the "criminal element", (And I don't think anyone would argue Pits attract some less-than-desirable owners) will keep them anyway, locked up and chained all day with no training. Then, when the dogs break loose and go on a rampage, everyone will say: "See! Pit bulls are monsters!"
Forget BSL-- make penalties for dog owners (Of ALL breeds) stiffer, including manslaughter if someone is killed.
Just my 2 cents, as a BSL-targeted owner. (Malamute)
Kiyote, are you from Colorado? The town that happened in is fairly close to my town. Pit Bulls or anything mixed with pits are banned in Denver, but not out where we live. I remember when that happened, it was really sad. Something I'm not sure if it's mentioned in that article or not is that she had been cited before for letting her dogs out and them being aggressive towards people.
Katz, when this happened it was 3 dogs that were attacking the neighbors. So that's why they all had to be put down. Someone else said the 'pack' thing. I think that's what happened as well.

We honestly don't have a lot of 'pit bull' headlines in our news. I think that's the only reason they made a big deal about it. I was born in Colorado and have lived here my whole life and I can remember only 3 times that they mentioned dog attacks in the news. This attack happened in a really rural area. But I do remember hearing that a neighbor had complained to that lady about her dogs getting out and attacking other people's pets and acting aggressively and that lady responded very nasty. Saying something like her dogs could do whatever they wanted or something like that. I don't remember too well now. I just remember a neighbor saying it on the news after it happened.
My computer won't let me watch that video. I'm so mad 'cause I want to see it!! It pops up saying that there's a conflict between windows media player and net something family. I don't know how to play it now!!!
