Husband went to pick up dog from the vet and came home with a cause of death
HOW could this happen?

I'm sorry for you and your family. I agree with others who have suggested that it was probably a pre-existing heart problem causing Percy's heart not to be able to handle the anesthesia. I have been in your situation, and it was devastating. In our case, Penny had a brain lesion, which we were not aware of, and because of that, could not handle the anesthesia. The people at the clinic were wonderful. When I got there a big man at the desk told me he gave her mouth to mouth and tried all he could, but couldn't help her. That big man was sobbing.

They had a necropsy done, and I called and called and they never had the info for me. Until about a month ago, when I took a kitten to be neutered at the same place, I thought it was my fault for taking Penny to be spayed too early. 3 months. (I didn't know better.) When I took the kitten in, I looked in my folder containing all my pets' spay/neuter records, and there was the necropsy report. Penny's death is still a very sad thing to me, but I do feel better knowing that it was not because of anything I did. I hope that you and DH will not be too hard on yourselves. You did not know about the heart problem and could not have been expected to.

that's two spaying and neutering horror stories I've heard in the past 2-3 days. =( I'm so sorry about your dog. I don't know what else to say.

Yes, and of course we are all nervous when we take our dogs for any surgery, BUT fortunately, these stories are the exception and not the norm. I've always had all my pets altered, and my family always did too, from the time they were children, and there's never been a problem until our Penny. I have heard of very few spay neuter fatalities, and so far none involving a dog that did not already have a congenital problem that was unknown before the operation. 3 months after Penny, I took Missy (her sister from the same litter) to be spayed. I was nervous as anything, but she came out smiling. Don't let it scare you from having your pets altered.

ansy, i'm so sorry. it looks to me like a congenital condition, too. i don't know what kind of test would be done to find this, but i'm sure they at least listened to his heart first in an exam. it would take more testing than that to find it.
you gave him a great home in the time he had with your family.

I am so terribly sorry ansy1. What a shock.

I always say, when you least expect it, it comes. I drive myself nuts worring about my dogs when they go to the vet. Anything could happen.

I guess it was when they never called me to tell me my cat died. When I called to see how she was they told me she died. I got very mad and told them off.

Heff- that is exactly what I was thinking.... 2 horror stories in 2-3 days about spaying and neutering. It's scary... I'm so sorry..

OMG! I am so very sorry. Just try to help Piper through this as well as your DH. Maybe having the new pup around my help more then you know? You are in my thoughts. Do not blame yourself. Something to think about....you might have been able to leave him where he was and he would've lived longer, who knows? right? But please keep in mind the life that he would have lived for so much longer....you gave him a happy, safe and warm two weeks. I am sure that he passed away happier then he had ever been in his life. Think of the good that you did, and how happy he was for those two weeks. He could still be where he was, but do you think he would have been happy? I doubt it. And let Percy live through Piper. I'm so sorry! That happened to my moms yorkie when she was younger. Don't feel bad, there is no way you could have known. He was a new dog and the blood test wouldn't have shown if a wall was weak. My dobe had a lot of trouble last time he was under(had a lump taken off) so we never ended up getting him fixed. I'm always afraid to put our corgi under too because she just always breathes so heavy. It seems like I've heard a lot of these sad storys lately.

Very sorry that must be a horrible thing to go through, just try to remember that you were having him neutered to give him a happier and longer life, this was just an unfortunate accident. At least he was a lucky dog to have a nice family, and at least he didn't suffer the way so many animals do when it is their time to go.

The vet who worked before my current vet only had one dog die during alteration. Actually, it died before the surgery could even begin! It was a male, small-breed dog that was in to be neutered. The vet gave him a normal dose of tranques and instead of just falling unconcious, the dog actually died.

Ansy my condolences to you for the loss of Percy. An animals death is always so painful. Britt Bratt i'm so sorry about the loss of your brother ,at only 14, i'm not sure what the right words to say are. God bless.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I know no one can say anthing that can make you feel anyless guilty. I've been there too, so I do have an idea of what you are going through...hopefully you'll make ther right decision with the puppy and things will work out the way they are meant to....my prayers are with you...

ansy i am so very sorry. i read this and cried . in all my years i have only witnessed 3 anesthetic deaths. one was a yorkie and one was a cat and both died before the actual procedure took place so they must have had an allergic reaction to the anesthetic which no test would be able to be run to determine that prior to the surgery. the 3rd was my guinea pig who died less then 24 hours after his bladdr surgery from respiratory complications. i know this will leave you with questions, second thoughts, etc. but just know that mostlikely there was no way of knowing any of this prior to the surgery, and you gave him a great 2 weeks of life that he never would have had if you had not taken him into your home.
