Hi, we recently got a chihuahua puppy and all of a sudden she got this eye infection thing this morning. theres this reddish swollen mass on the inside corner of her eye. Almost like her tear duct is swollen. It looks very painful but doesnt seem to be bothering her. She has not scratched at it and seems to be acting normal. Any suggestions on what you think this is? what can I do to help until i get to the vets?
Wow, I'm surprised no one answered you yet. This sounds like cherry eye. If its not too bad you can probably get him put on anitbiotics and it should shrink. Worse case would be something surgical done. Possibly his eye lashes may be inverted into his eye cause the discomfort. But first off, bring him in let the vet look at it. I think its cherry eye, which won't go away on its own and will get bigger til the eye shuts.
sounds like a cherry eye. surgery is the only way to correct it if that is what it is. there are 2 surgical procedures that are done to correct it. one is a tacking procedure where they take the cherry eye and tack it down to the inside of the lower eye lid. the other is complete removal of the cherry eye. they take a hemostat, clamp it off, slice it off and its done. i have seen the best results with the complete removl of the cherry eye. the tacking procedure does not always work.
My Beagle Bubba has battled so many eye ifections! Most are caused by either A) something foreign in the eye or damage to eye such as a scratch or B) what the folks above mentioned an inverted eye lid. You might start by taking a really close look at your Chi's eye just to make sure there is nothing in it, even if you can't see anything washing it out with warm salt water certainly would not hurt, this would flush out anything you couldn't see, even if there is not anything in there it will help was the infection out. Another thing you can use at home is to doctor the eye by putting triple antibiotic cream in it, this should help. If this is just a simple injury it may heal on its own but it is better to take one to the vet, because if it is eye lid trouble that is something that must be fixed or they will suffer with it all it's life. My dog had gotten something in his eye at one point and it scratched his eye, we have battle eye infections from this fro months, the one thing that helps a severe case like is to get some antibiotics from the vet.
We have had that same issue with our shar pei puppy. The condition is called "cherry eye" and it is very common in several different breeds. You need to take your to your vet as soon as possible, but he/she will be fine in the meantime. You can look up cherry eye online and you will find more information.
Someone please correct me if I am wrong. This is a problem in the breed you are asking about and no way would I breed the dog. I would also talk to my ACVO vet and get a CERF exam and discuss this specifically with he/she.
