I signed on the net one day to order a catolog from petco. When I typed Petco into the search I found all kinds of web sites claiming that Petco stores around the world neglect the animals they sell. Cages were dirty, animals were sick, had no food or water ect. When confronted it was said employees did nothing to remedy the problems. Most of the sites were PETA sites. I've never personally been in a petco store so I'm not sure if these claims have any merit. I really want a petco catolog to order out of but I refuse to if these claims are true. does anyone have any info on this? Does anyone know if this is true?
I cant speak for the claims, but the Petco by me is very clean, bird cages are clean, reptile cages are clean. The animals look well maintained. They don't sell cats or dogs. They only have special times when the shelter brings in animals to place.
They had an incident here like that, but it was Petsmart not Petco. They're pretty much the same thing though. The claim here was also made by PETA, (which I think are too extreme) and it was that the fish weren't being taken care of properly. Not to sound sarcastic, but they probably saw a dead goldfish in a tank and made a big deal about it.
Our Petco here is very clean. All the cages are kept clean and the animals look happy. Ours doesn't sell dogs or cats either. I am not sure if any Petco sells them. But there is always at least one cat in there from the Humane Society in a very large cage that is two story.
One of ours is.....there is always a ton of dead/dying fish in the tank and one time I showed one of the staff a hamster that had a tumor or something that was growing on it and she said that it would probably be killed. I also showed one lady, a different one then before, a dwarf hamster that had an open wound on his leg and he was bleeding all over the place.....again she said he would probably be killed and/or fed to the snakes. I was so disgusted. I only shop at Petsmart. They seem so much better, at least where I live. I also like the fact that they let the shelters bring up animals and try to adopt them from there.
I have seen animals in the petco near where i live with empty water bottles. When i approached the employees they did not care. It seemed like it was not important to them because they were only feeder mice and feeder rats. I could not believe this. I left and came back to the store a few hours later and nobody had given those animals any water.
I have also been to a few PetsMarts and i have never seen any neglect there. I always see employees cleaning cages. I actually bought a chinchilla there and they were very helpful. They told me all about them and got me set up with everything i would need. I have owned them for a year and love them. I think Petsmart is great. Everyone there is so helpful.
A few weeks ago I brought one of my chinchillas to petco because i was looking foe somehting new for them. When i walked in the door i was greeted and a few employees seemed interested in my pet. But then they decided that they would feed him a dog treat without asking me. They told me it was ok because he would like it. I was able to stop it but was shocked that they would give my chinchilla a treat that was meant for a dog. I know for a fact that there was meat product in it too. When i stopped them from giving the treat they acted offended. I could not believe it. After that incident i will no longer shop at Petco and i advise anyone bringing a pet there to watch what they eat there.
I think with any pet stores it has more to do with the managment than what chain they are. Any pet store with good staff and managment that care for the animals they sell is usually a well run store, but the problem w/ petco's and petsmarts along with countless other pet stores is that not all stores are run that way. You may have one Petco manager that runs a clean efficent business with very healthy pets, and another just in one town away that has neglected animals. I think it would be hard to pin on any one company. We don't have a Petco/Petsmart vert close to us, but the closest one we do have is poorly kept, While it is usually fairly clean, there is a serious lack of skilled people to work w/ the animals, animals are not handled using proper techniques, nor am I sure they are cared for as well as they should be. Animals are constantly escaping and are very unsolicalized from my experience w/ this particular store. I very much think it has more to do w/ the people running the store than the Petsmart company themselves.
Ok I worked at Petsmart for about 6 months to a year, and let me say this, they are very rushed with the way they do things. They gave me NO formal training on how to care for the animals. The lady basically told me to watch her and do what she did.... and never gave me ANY reason why or what it would do. FIsh are fish, and let me tell you the stresss that they go through during transport is what kills them, not usually improper care. Water temp fluctuations are killer.... As for the rest of petsmart... I didnt really care for it, and if I had my choice I would shop at PetCo! IT is WAY cleaner than Petsmart up here! Petsmart is filthy, and the teammates could mostly care less. The hamstes and birds and stuff... you should see the little sick room in the back where they keep the sick and dying.... it is bad, really bad. 99% of them who go back there dont make it out. And like I said they dont train you on what you need to know, to help customers, or care for the animals. They expect that you should know when you get there.....Which I do NOT think is right. Yes they have sheets that tell about the animals, but that is mostly for the customer... it is not the indepth stuff that associates shoudl know. I had to do my own research at home to be able to help customers with questions. It was ridiculous! LIke a circus really... and even banfield the vet that is in there.... didnt really care what happened to the hamsters and guinea pigs. I mean they woudl treat them but it was like they werent really sure what they were treating. Oh well, I guess it is make a decision for yourself. Personally I like to support small local businesses instead. Chains, they all carry the same products.
Does petco even sell dogs and cats? I know they sell small animals like hamsters, frogs, snakes, and birds. I've been to Petco and the cages are all very clean. The birds are kept in a seperate section and they aren't all crammed into one cage. Support Petco! They have adoption days =]
I seriously think there ought to be more training involved to work at a pet store, I mean a day care would hire someone who knew nothing about kids why would a pet store hire someone who knows nothing about animals? Last two times I went to a PetSmart the first time I was asking about purchasing a Lovebird there, the man who was su[pposed to be helping me tried to catch one to show me how "gentle" they were only he obviously had never touched, caught, held a bird in his life, he let every bird in the entire store escape into the rafters. The second time I went the worker was freaking out because a hermit crab got loose and he was terrifyed of it and would pick it up. I mean when those are the kind of people you have working at some pet stores it is no wonder the condition some are in.
I have a PetCo and a Pet Depot where I live and a Petsmart in another town and I prefer Petco. It is by far the cleaner store. I would rather shop from small business but they were put out of business by the big companies
