Looking for suggestions/opinions here. I have tried a kong, but my chewer, Kicho-Na, only plays with it occasionally (even when I put stuff in it). I have tried a Nylabone, again, she lost interest. Rawhide makes her puke because when she chews that, she will swallow it. I have various stuffed animals, but after a short period of time, she tears them apart. (I had one that only lasted 1/2 and hour! $5.00 down the drain!) I have also tried rope toys, but she lost interest in them, too. She currently has a cow hoof that my hubby bought, but boy does it STINK!!!! (Plus I think it's yucky!) She chews up pine cones, redwood bark, sticks and socks. She's 2, so I know she's not teething. Anyone have any suggestions and/or opinions on what other chewy items I could try?
i buy my dogs the big soup bones from the supermarket. they usually have meat on the outside and marrow on the inside. many people i know give them to their dogs raw but i always cook mine for 1/2 hour in boiling water. they are only like 2 bucks for a package of two - three so it is very cheap. they also have the same ones in smaller sizes too if you have little dogs. it keeps them occupied for hours trying to get all the marrow out and they still love to chew them even when the meat and marrow are all gone.
i love the kong, there are so many different types. my dogs love them, we put yogurt, peanut butter, some carrots, and even some dog crunchies, freeze it and then give it to them. they love this, takes a good 1/2 hour to get it all out. sometimes when we eat i put a few treats in and then that keeps them busy so not to bother us at dinner time. i just bought new ones called "cosmic cones". they are bigger and a little easier for them to get their tounges into. good toys, i also buy the soup bones(small ones though) i have seen large dogs with the large bones get the bottom jaw stuck inside the bone. these are just the smaller flat ones, i keep them frozen also, don't make as much of a mess. they're good for the teeth also, helps keep the plack down. i get like 6 in a package at the grocery for like a little over a dollar.
The soup bones are a good idea but I wanted to add that my dog once got one stuck over her bottom canine teeth and around the bottom of her chin. She managed to get a soft spot in the bone/marrow and somehow it slipped behind her canines where she couldnt close her mouth. She was pretty freaked out but I got it off and didnt get the bones again :) Probably a freak thing but something to keep in mind depending on what size you get.. My dog now loves a kong bone. It is actually harder then the kong, but similar type of material and is a large bone. She starts at one end and chews it down until it is almost like a ball. Takes her 2 months to get it down. It lasts longer then the kong as my pitbull can get through it in a day. (oops I mean could as she just passed away last week :( The company that makes the Kongs do not guarantee them any longer.. they guarantee "fun" but can't guarantee long lasting :)
LOL pearl, that must be quite a sight! Kicho-Na is a papillon/corgi mix. But, now that you mention it, a big ball of some sort might be good. (Currently she is chasing her food bowl around the kitchen with her nose!) Maybe a croquet ball?
well i guess a bowling ball would squish her. i got a small size indestructable ball for my pug. he noses it all over and has a good time. it was from the petsmart catalog. i have a large one outdoors, too.
luvmymutts i have all hardwood floors so i really don't notice a mess but i guess they could. daisy i have seen dogs who have gotten the smaller ones wrapped around their lower jaw. the ones i get for my guys are about 6-8 incehes long so it would be very difficult for that to happen. the smaller ones that are about 2 inches long are the ones that could get easily stuck.
ROFLMAO pearl! The mental cartoon image of Kicho getting squished by a bowling ball was just too much for me! Thanks for the info on the ball, I'll look for one. Thanks to everyone else, too for the ideas and info!
I bet I got the smaller bones Scout.. It wasreally funny looking back and I had not ever thought that could happen, but at the time talk about panic mode!! So glad I could use my brain to think, it got on there somehow it will come off without sawing it! She was so happy to get the bone off but was just as happy to start chomping on it.. unfortunately i took it away because I had enough for one night.. haha She enjoyed them but I made sure they were different ones next time!
